So I am currently in the market seeking a 40-45 ft boat to liveaboard in the SF bay area. I have been constantly juggling between getting a sport fisher or a trawler. Since I can't make up my mind I have decided to come to my fellows on here for some advice of pro's and con's for a boat that would work best in our region. I want a boat that would be great to go fishing with from San Diego all the way up to Seattle. I realize that certain boats are better suited for different regions which is why I have come here with my questions.
1.) which would be more comfortable to live aboard.
2.) which would be more fueld efficient.
3.) which style (trawler vs. sport fisher) offers more "bang for the buck".
4.) and finally every boaters back of the head question, which has lower maintenance.

I am definitely looking to stick to fiberglass as I think they offer least maintenance. Any help would be much appreciated. Let me know if I left anything out. :joincc:

Uh...these boats couldn't be more different. One is fast, guzzles tons of fuel and is typically built for the big Ocean. The other is slow, relatively economical and is better in calmer waters. The Northwest isn't anywhere near San Diego or San Francisco for that matter. Those are Ocean areas. The boating around Seattle is primarily inland waters in the Puget Sound or San Juan Islands and the inside passage to Alaska where you will find a few sportfishers but not in abundance. Sounds like you need to narrow your viewpoint a bit first.

Trawler is the only way to go for a live aboard in the Bay area. It is gonna be better in every aspect except getting there fast and it is gonna lack fishing amenities. I agree with RJMAN36 that the Bay area isn't really the NW. I am from the Seattle area though and spend 99% of my time offshore and rarely go in the Puget Sound, even though it is very nice.

There are many rigs for sale in marinas all over the peninsula and the bay. Just get out there and start getting on a few to see which style suits you. You have to able to live on the thing 24-7 most importantly. As for maintenance, they ALL require much more than you think. Wood is more than glass, but glass needs a lot of love too
