I have a cantilever 4500 lb boat lift. The boat is an outboard 250 4 stroke Yamaha and the boat weighs about 4000lbs with a full gas tank.
It sits in a lake and the water level raises and lowers.
When the level is low I usually power off the lift in reverse.
How bad is that for the motor?
Something about cavatating?

You never want to power on or off a boat lift like you would a boat trailer, they're not designed for that as it can cause damage to the structure. As far as your outboard engine I would have some concern. I certainly don't want my RPMS very high in a shallow water application as you can suck up lots of sand/mud which isn't good for an engine.
