My girlfriend is moving to Virginia (outside of richmond) I am driving the u-haul down for her. However she wants to tow her car down on the u-haul to save $ on gas tolls and miles on her lease (already over). I figured the best way was getting the full trailer add on as opposed to the two wheel contraption I see people driving with.
Anyone ever do this?

When we moved to Va nine years ago, we put the wife's Sonata on the full car trailer. With the diesel truck it was no sweat. If you can tow a boat you can do it. Wide turns and anticipate the airheads.

I move every two or three years (thanks DoD!) and have done it both ways. The Uhaul trailers and dollies are pretty overbuilt to survive for as long as they do in a rental environment.
Last move I stepped up to a 26' Penske diesel truck and hauled the Jeep on a dolly. It was a lot more pleasant to drive cross country than the smaller gasser vans. Still slow as hell, but I spent less on fuel than I would have on a smaller gas truck. Cost wise it was still a little (under $200) more expensive but I was able to haul a TON (literally) more stuff in back.
Between tools, ammo, other heavy stuff, and the Jeep I was at 8.5k worth of cargo and got paid by the pound to move it myself...
I think the 20 footer is the smallest Uhaul that you can use to tow a car. Check with Penske and Ryder to compare prices and see how much extra it is to step up to a medium duty diesel van.

I moved from the upper peninsula of Michigan to Wyoming about 12 years ago. I pulled one car hauler behind the U-Haul truck, my now ex wife pulled the other car on a second car hauler behind my pickup. Piece of cake. The hauler is WELL worth it over the dolly.
Both cars also provided extra room to haul stuff.

Check with Penske and Ryder to compare prices.
Make sure to do this.
I found U-Haul to be price gouging just because so many people automatically go to them to rent.

I have done this many (too many!) times over the years. Used both the dolly and the hauler.
My preference is the hauler. The dolly doesn't back up, and I think it is a little easier on the car riding on the hauler as opposed to being half on the dolly.
My biggest advice is use Penske or Budget. Do not use U-haul unless you absolutely have no other choice. Their truck maintainance is questionable, and they let the trucks get pretty old and high mileage. Penske and Budget on the other hand sell off and replace constantly. And the trucks and trailers just have that well cared for, well maintained feel . . . if you know what I mean.
Also, check prices from various places. Sometimes it makes a difference. I moved my sister from Vermont to Florida a few years back, and by flying to Boston and picking up the truck, rather than Vermont, it saved about $350. Added two hours drive time, but worth it for the money.

Wish I had told my girlfriend this
u-haul rep gave her a really good rate $180 off
Went to pick up u-haul from a different place (requested trailer) and extremely rude gas station owner who was a u-haul franchise and he refused to honor the promotion. U-haul customer service spoke to owner and told him he has to take it. Hung up phone on them....
She's picking up a u-haul at a different place now and no trailer. She is getting discount w/ extra mileage.

Are you the muffin man from va by any chance that drives Hondas?
Also, the hauler is better than the dolly. Let someone else's equipment take the abuse and miles

Nope!
I drove the u-haul and she drove her car.
u-haul handled awful and was ALL over the road (My guess unevenly packed) Once we unloaded it was 5 mins till i dropped it off.
12mpg and crappy braking
It shifted really smooth!

I did it no problem down east coast hauling small SUV on there full trailer with the biggest truck they rent. HOWEVER use Penske not uhaul. Uhaul is junk!! I seriously have 2 friends who broke down with there JUNK and was a major PIA.

Get the hauler. Can't really backup with the dolly. Uhaul trucks are pieces of junk. I've rented from Penske and their equient is much nicer and better maintained (plus it's just more fun to drive a dock-height diesel).
