As I sit here this afternoon, watching the rain come down, dreaming of going fishing in the near future, I was wondering what others do to catch Mangroves around the rigs.

Our go to is usually chunks of pogie, chumming them out of the rig, and free lining a small hook with a piece of cut bait on the hook, hidden as best as we can. Usually on the upcurrent side of the rig. I have also used live bait, with a light tout head weighting it down, with success.

But, I have heard of using boiled noodles to get them out of the rig, throwing them in the water makes a baitfish like noise. then sending down cut bait to catch them.

We will be trying to make a trip next weekend, pending the weather, so, let's hear your favorite trick or tactic to get these finicky little fish to bite

AFD,

Do you actually fish with the macaroni or just chum them up with it? That sounds like a really good way to chum them up.....good tip!!

Maybe I'm just lazy, or a boat driver who wants to fish, but we tie up down current. and chum into the rig and let it drift out. mostly chum pogies on 40 floro also. shoot a few too.

do you guys prefer clean water or dirtier? clean its fun to watch em bite, but they seem much more finicky. Dirty you often don't see the bite, but can use higher lb. leader.

Here's our plan of attack so far, gonna use spinning outfits with 40# flouro leaders, and smallest hooks possible. Gonna boil about 20# of elbow noodles, soak them in Menhaden oil the night before. Also, going to go catch live croakers the day before, hoping to bring about 300 with us out there. Then we will have a 50# flat of pogies, to chum with, and to use for bait. We're thinking of anchoring upcurrent side of the rig, and letting our bait drift into the rig to catch them. Should be fun, bringing 5 guys, hoping for 50 Mangroves and a few ling to fill the boxes.

Sounds like you guys are prepared for battle! Let us know how you do. I have not fished for Mangroves, but plan on doing that just as soon as I get my Caracal set up with gps and radios. I am really interested to hear how the macroni trick works.

You would be surprised what a Mangrove does to a peeled dead shrimp threaded on a 3/0 live bait hook.

I buy menhaden oil at academy and use it to soak my cedar plugs in it. They always have several gallons.
