Sounds like a bull shark, although some saying could be a bluefish. Reports of a fin in the water. Minor cuts to his legs. Waiting for the "experts" to view the bite.

I'd rather have White sharks then Bulls, Bulls are scaryyyyyyyyyyy

Agreed. Bulls are way more aggressive than whites when it comes to humans. I guess the tradeoff is if a bull bites you, you don't always lose your legs....
Either way, can't wait for the hysteria to start.

Don't see many bull sharks up here, but that does make sense. I didn't even think of that until now. And if you factor in the weird warm water fish being caught and pelicans spotted off Peaked Hill Bar, it makes even more sense.

If we could get mahi at the race or stellwagen I would probably take the rest of the summer off from work just to fish for them.

Official word is it's a white....
I'm not surprised, it was only a matter of time. Can we exterminate the seals now?
Got word Skomal confirmed white shark. Musta been a little guy cuz I never heard of a white shark gum someone. He was lucky...
CMP
Not to be insensitive, but how many warnings do people need?
Act like a seal where seals are being hunted and some poor shark is gonna make a mistake.
We don't need fewer sharks, just people with more active brain cells.
Eventually, the sharks will take care of the seal problem.
Don't get me wrong Gerg, I don't give a flying fuck about someome getting bit for all the reasons you post. We should be killing seals by the thousands. The white sharks can't control this scourge on thier own...
CMP
Unfortunately you may be right. Once you remove the apex predators, you need to control the population of the secondary species. We do controlled hunts on land all the time when a population of second tier predators or even deer goes too high.
But, I have no idea what the right number would be. Maybe they should allow a kill to feed the sharks in another part of the ocean - away from people. Two problems solved. ;)
When I was a kid, there were fewer than 1,000 seals on Monomoy. There are more than 30,000 from ACK to PVT today. Out of control is an understatement...

Yeah, but a generation or two before that, there were thousands more as well. Using a decimated population as a baseline isn't right either. As you (or someone said), there were bounty's on them for years and years without regard to population impact. Well, there was regard, they wanted them eradicated.
Somewhere there is balance, but driving the population to the point of collapse doesn't seem right either.

The seals now have their own strain of influenza that's similar to that of the bird flu. I feel bad for the Mighty Whities now, they can get the flu!

My guess: Even if someone gets killed by a shark the greenies will not allow a seal hunt. The word will be "people need to better understand the inherent dangers they face at the beach," followed by a call for more "beach goer education and town involvement in saftey."
The movie Jaws is not far from the truth. Moms will say no to the Cape Cod beach vacation next year and parents will just find some other place to go with the family. Hey, there ain't no white sharks in lakes. If the Cape has a chamber of commerce, they better get off their butts and start petitioning the government for relief.

This season and the last Cape Cod tourism benefited from the media hysteria about white sharks. It was all good until the inevitable shark attack. It will be interesting to watch this play out. No doubt it will happen again. Nothing will change unless serious $$ are effected. It remains to be seen if the White sharks will drive more tourism or kill it out of fear. I’d be willing to bet it will take someone being killed before any serious discussion about culling the seal population will take place but that may not even do it.

I hear ya but the I'm sure the merchants who depend on the income from those crowds would disagree. However, coffee shops always survive in any economy, so at least your fav. coffee shop will still be there.

80%(guesstimate) of the merchants are off cape seasonal people as well, at least all the shop owners I knew dont own them anymore. when I was a kid most businesses were local owned but we have been gentrified to the point of extinction. the coffee shop is owned by locals, as are some other shops but 80% (guesstamite) of the restraunts, shops, etc. on the outer cape are closed in the winter because the shop owners are at their winter residencies....like the Joker said in Batman "this place needs an enema" I now live off cape, but "service" the the seasonal populations toys on cape. I guess If you grew up down there you would see both sides.
looks like MR sharkey will control more than the seal population....

Oh there is a Chamber of Commerce down here.....they're the ones who decided the shark following the kayaker a few weeks back was a Basker....what a joke.

Dont the alligators occasionally kill someone in Florida? As a society, we have decided that having alligators is worth losing the occasional child every few years.
Same with bears and mountain lions.
Our ancestors would think that we were nuts. They wiped out any dangerous wild animals and thought it was a no brainer. Now, as a society, we figure it is worth a few dead humans to have these "marvelous" animals around.

I'll bet the curious gawking tourist population would more then replace the loss of bathers and beach goers. This is not 1970 or 1960 or 1950. 50 years ago you say shark and people panic and run away because nothing was known about them. Today you yell shark and very eyeballer with internet access comes running and wants to see it. 50 years ago the cape and its beaches were not within the general public’s financial reach for recreation. The average regular joe and his family just could not afford a trip to the outer cape for a day, a weekend, or a week. Today the government gives people money to do nothing and cell phones to call people to brag about it, and its also enough to go on vacations.

No doubt some folks will show up to see where the sharks are. That will be day tripers for the most part. Can you imagine going soomewhere for a week to just stare at the water waiting to see a shark? The kids will do that for about three minutes and then it's time to go to the lake.

Then don't go in the woods or water. If someone comes in your house what are you gonna do? Just the chance you take. But don't be a moron in a black wet suit swimming with seals.

That's an absurd statement. Who do you think stayed on all of those cottages? Hell, as teenagers living off Cape, we used to drive down to Craigville, Seagull, Corporation or all the way to Nauset all the time -- for the day or for several.

They are "marvelous" and irreplaceable as part of the animal kingdom hierarchy.....proper management of all species is what's needed....hence gator, bear and catamount hunting......seal hunting might help.
The biggest problem is that we can't control who gets eaten by the animals you mentioned.....cuz there's plenty of us humans that deserve it.

Yeah, lots of good stories on this one. Anything to keep people going to the beaches. 1/3 a mile from the beach, but the folks on the beach clearly saw the fin. That's some damn good eyesight....

Proper management? That is a hole you can drive a barn through. By whom? I'm not sure we have any honest or credible candidates for this gig, there are way too many agendas out there.
