Hello Anglers,

I"ve been researching the net for braid backing to mono topshotting and I'm getting different results where Braid backing is to be followed by a lesser test weight of mono and other places mentioning higher. My set up is 80# power pro spectra and I need to make a decision with THT members help on what size mono to topshot with. 50# or 100#.
PS: I will be trolling with this setup fwiw.

Thank you in advance,

Ray

I would ask, "What reel size and what rod rating?" If a 50b set up then I would stick with 50 or maybe 60lb test.

In a catastrophy I would always want the mono to break before the braid, I would always want the mono to break before the rod and I would want the mono to break before a reel was damaged.

Also, for wat its worth, I frquently troll with leaders under 100lb test, and I see no point in your running like to test more than your leaders.

Hope this helps,

JPK

Trolling 80# braid 80# mono
Chunking/livelining 80 braid=60# mono/fluro
this would be on a 20-30 internaional class reel

I'll be running a 22# class with a 30-50 class rod .

Thanks
