Had a friend of mine bump into the prop yesterday while sitting at the sandbar. The prop was not turning and the engine was not running. He had been drinking quite a bit and I think he tripped or stumbled into it as it is not sharp when running your fingers over the edges.
Can only imagine what it would do under power.

Like your buddy, I was lucky when my wife fell out of our dinghy and I ran over her before I could shut the engine off. Prop tangled up in her shirt enough to stall the 9.9 out. Got away with a cut just beneath one of her boobs. Very lucky that day....
Really the focus should be on the drinking. Drinking and boating are not a good mix.
Couple years back there was a prop incident that killed a kid at the ramp in Camp Land on Mission Bay, San Diego. Guy back the boat into a kid in the water and basically eviscerated him and the kid did not make it. I heard it all go down on the radio as I was launching across the bay. Very sad and ugly.

I disagree with that! There was no one operating a boat they were anchored on a sand bar having a good day (I'm sure the capt was sober). He could have as easly cut himself on anything on land.

anyone else notice how the beer is still in the huggie in his hand while his leg is propped up to stop the bleeding? Give that man a trophy for not spilling!

Been there done that a few years ago. :o Had my family out on a local lake for a Father's day weekend boat ride. Tied up in a deep cove so daughter and I jumped out to take a swim while my wife and Mom were hanging out in the boat. Lift my daughter up since she was tired of swimming. I lift myself up at the back of the boat, swing my right leg up and whammo on the prop right on my shin just above my ankle. Laid it open like your buds but I didn't have much blood. Panic set in with wife and Mom (hid it from my daughter)....wrapped a towel around my leg, headed to boat ramp, retrieve truck\trailer, load boat and rush to local emergency room. 17 or 18 stitches and I was good to go. They were all still in shock. I was proud to have held it together but will never enter the boat at the back without a ladder.

I have a pretty good scar (27 staples worth) on my head from the prop on an I/O. Was 24 years old, just back from a deployment, and full of piss & vinegar & Wild Turkey. Lesson learned for me...
I'm also missing my left index finger tip from the OB on the Whaler. No beer involved, was working on it in the garage and thought I had it tilted down all the way. Well, it wasn't and dropped the last 1.5" and lopped my finger tip right off. I might do a thread on that sometime as a PSA on poor situational awareness...

He's lucky. A little higher and he could have done some serious ligament damage to his knee.

Same thing happened to a friend of my secretary two weeks ago here in Miami. She fought to save her leg as the prop (not running not spinning) hit her in thigh. Days in icu, leg saved but still pretty messed up.

OMG! That's amazing that so much damage could be done by a prop that's not even spinning. For those that store your boats at home, do you use anything particular to guard against something like this happening in your driveway? I was thinking that something like a cloth bag of some sort might work. What you guys think?

Wow. I've walked into my prop plenty of times on land and never even got a cut. He must have fell and landed on it some how.
we wrap ours with a towel and bungies when the kids are swimming at the sand bar. Someday I will forget to unwrap it, and i will be here asking for help.
At home, I remove it in the driveway. Too many kids.

I was pushing the boat out to deeper water on July 4th and kicked the prop. Sliced my shin pretty deep. I really didn't hit it that hard and didn't know I was cut until I walked out of the water.

i always raise the outboards out of the water when anchored at sandbar/ swim depth so no one does bump into them.
ditto on the dedication to keeping on drinking. although dumb, thins blood makes stitching harder

Wow. I've walked into my prop plenty of times on land and never even got a cut. He must have fell and landed on it some how. That's what I think too. He was pretty drunk. I think he tripped or stumbled into it with most of his weight. The weird thing is it hardly bled.

My wife's cousin fell out of his small fishing boat and lost his foot.
I don't know how how fell out or how fast he was going, but when he fell out he grab hold the side of his boat and his foot went right in the prop.
He was still holding on when another boater saw him and they came to his aid. One of the boater jumped in his boat and shut it off. He went to hospital but lost his foot.

I never understood all the warning about a sharp prop,,until I looked closly at one that had a few hours on it. Very small area where the blade transitions from the cup to flat that was razor sharp. Maybe 3/4 of an inch long, but very very sharp.

Didn't see much of a first aid kit in the pic. A dirty towel and sponge may not be the best thing to apply to an open wound.

Didn't see much of a first aid kit in the pic. A dirty towel and sponge may not be the best thing to apply to an open wound.Towels were brand new out of package. The wound was wrapped in new out of package gauze. There was hardly any bleeding and the wound should of just been left uncovered since there was no blood loss. My sister in-law wouldn't listen to me. She wanted to do a turnikit.:roll. I would be willing to bet the boat has more first aid supplies on board than you carry.
