I used some jigging rods for bottom fishing. I loved how short they were ~ 5', lots of power, easier rods for my younger kids to handle when they were reeling up grouper. We weren't jigging, instead used them with live and dead bait. Some where being held, others were left in the rod holders until you saw them bend over.
Any reason not to use jigging rods for all bottom fishing?
What's the advantage of a traditional rod over a jigging rod for bottom fishing?

I've done the same for my kids. A TLD 15 and Shimano Trevala Jigging rod weighs a couple pounds less than my Penn Senators with AllStar rods. Makes a big difference during a long day for a 8 and 9 year old. Never had a problem

There is ZERO disadvantage. I even troll some of my jigging rods.. You can actually apply more pressure on a fish with less stress on the angler with the parabolic rods.
People are amazed when I tell them to lift a 15Lb dumbbell with a Jigging rod and then do it with a stand up rod.. So much more effort is needed with the Standup rod or any rod that has a stiff backbone.

I also use mine for trolling sometimes on lighter line weights, people get too obsessed by what rods were designed for

My favorite set up for gag grouper fishing is a Shimano Tyrnos 8 two speed reel on a Trevala jigging rod. Looks like a small setup for bottom fishing but looks can be deceiving. Much lighter & bulky than your normal bottom pole. Would never go back.

no problem using jigging rods for steady bottom fishing. We jig for bottom fish anyways with the same rods.

Yeah if you think of the leverage (holding up a 20 lbs weight at the end of a 5" vs a regular rod), the short rod seems to have major advantages. I am wondering why short jigging rods have not become the standard for all bottom fishing.

I rarely use one for regular bottom fishing. Like I mentioned in my previous post they will work no problem buy I like a stiffer rod when trying to horse a big snapper from his cave or wreck.

So to turn the fish and get him out of holes the non-jigging rod maybe better? It's an important distinction because that's really the most important part. Once a fish is turned out out of a hole the catch is usually made. The "hole" problem is usually that first 10 seconds right when he bites-- getting him turned and away or out of a hole.
So for that, which is better? Short jigging rod with great leverage but soft, or stiff conventional rod?

There are far better jigging rods out other than Trevalla that will turn big fish pronto. All my jigging rods are short, 4'10" upto 5'2". and they will turn a freight train. Jigging rods are also softer on the angler too. A meat stick works equally against you as it does the fish. It will honestly depend on your budget.

I was planning on going with Star Plasma 5'3" XHeavy Jigging rods. Bought 4 in May (all got stolen) but I liked them. Planning on buying the same thing again. Pricey ($329 each) but light, short, strong. Before I invested in 4 more I wanted to confirm they were good for regular bottom fishing. Seems like they are based on this thread.
Next question is if I should get one more for a spinning outfit (to pair with a Shimano Saragosa 8000) to have a spinning outfit for grouper, snapper, bottom fishing and for jigging.

See if you can find a Stella 8000 FA older version for a decent price. The Gosa 8000 doesn't hold up too well to the riggors of Jigging Ajs.

the Stella 8000SWPG is a great inshore Jigging reel with its lower gear ration.. I would also consider the Black Hole Jigging rods.. Here the specs on both the rods and reel.

Not to derail the thread, but looking at the specs for the rods, what does "acid wrapped" mean and what does it do for the rod?;?
Thx
Bill

The guides on a conventional spin around the blank and the last 4 guides are facing down like a spinning rod. Conventional rods tend to roll the tip over when fighting a fish thus causing the the rod to torque left and right. Acid wrapped rods eliminate that.

I have heard of it being called "spiral wrapped" and understand why one would choose to have it. I think some are saying a narrow spool reel helps reduce the rod torque. Thx for the clarification

The Narrow reel will help with the balance of the rod (side to side) and the narrow spools are really designed to lay the line on better when your speed jigging.
The Acid, Spiral or roberts wrapped rods take the Tip twist away.. Its also good for casting as well

maybe give Bryan from Connley rod a call i am sure he can build you a great jigging rod that you can also use for your standard bottom fishing.

Not only do we give the hull truth members good information, we also design and build custom rods as well!!
