Depending on current 2to 4 oz is enough along with 2/0 circles.

How Deep? And how much Current we use up to 24oz in 300ft depending on Current and Depth.

Here in NC we carry from 2oz. up to 24oz. Usually start with 8oz. & make adjustments, depending on what the current, wind & sea conditions.
Ideally if your fishing with a few people you want your line to be straight up, to prevent tangles. ........
Hope this helps ....... ICM

Off GA and southernmost part of SC Coast the near shore reefs are in 45 to 75 feet of water (11 to 20 miles out) and the Black Sea Bass and vermillion are very plentiful but are 10 to 18 inch fish with more being in the 10-14 inch range.
I like fishing for them with a 4000 series spinning reel on a medium action rod. This lets me feel the bite of Black Sea bass but still real in a 30 Lbs Cobia. If I went up to an 8 oz weight or more, I would hardly feel the bite of the 10-14 inch fish which is constant.
So for our situation we start at 2 oz which usually gets our lines down fast enough and straight enough to avoid tangles and step it up an ounce at a time as the current demands.
But area that the OP gave, from Fl to NC covers a WIDE range of habitat and bottom /current conditions. So I can see why those fishing deeper need more weight. Even off the coast here, if you went to our Deeper reefs in 120 ft of water for Grouper and Red Snapper you would want more weight.

Totally depends on depth, current and what tackle you are using.

Fishing from 60 ft. deep out to 140 ft., we normally use 10 and 12 oz. If there is a lot of current we use 16 oz. We use conventional reels with 60 lbs. braid.
With braided line, you'll have no trouble feeling bites when using 16 ounce sinkers.
