With the forecast of 2 foot every 10 seconds Saturday myself and my two fishing buddies got to due something we have talked about for the last several years. Both Mark and Thom have 6 year old boys and Saturday was the day we would introduce them to offshore fishing!
This week is Thom's vacation so we met up at their beach house in Nags Head Friday evening to prep rods and lay out a plan. I spoke with Offshore Mark on the ride down as I knew he had fished Friday, he said they had a pretty good day with the billfish Friday. After Mark and Thom taking strict instructions from the boys mothers :) we all tried to get some sleep for a 4 am start. Surprisingly the boys got up with no issues and after a stop at the 7-Eleven for snacks we loaded the boat. Reached the inlet and beautiful seas and pointed her north to the 000s and 40 fathoms
An hour into the troll the shotgun goes off thinking billfish but after a short fight a nice yft comes to the leader and goes in the box for dinner. The boys showed some excitement with the scream of the reel and some blood on the deck but a short while later comment they are ready to go fast again:rofl:. Both dads comment to the boys another fish should come soon which surprisingly worked! We continue to work a nice piece of water with good bait marks and cross path's with the Tina Louise with no love. After a while we push offshore to the 100 to see if any life is present when the flat line split bill gets eaten by a gaffer dolphin, Henry Thom's son is more then willing to do the cranking and reels the fish to the leader with the rod in the holder. A short time later a repeat with Jason doing the cranking this time, from that point on the boys never got bored and hung right in there the rest of the day.
Around 1 we finally did get a chance with a billfish with a swing and a miss but our goal for the day had been accomplished. We continued to look another billfish till around 2 then picked up and ran to some tile fish numbers to end the day. All and all a great day on the water!
