COCODRIE, La. - A popular Cocodrie restaurant and bar sustained significant damage in an overnight fire, authorities said.
Harbor Light, at the end of La. 56, is "pretty much totally destroyed" as the result of a fire reported at 1:29 a.m., Little Caillou Fire Chief Marty Thibodeaux said.
One person sleeping in one of its six rental rooms escaped unharmed, Thibodeaux said. Two of the six rooms are heavily damaged, Thibodeaux said.
The building was "fully engulfed" when firefighters arrived, and the flames were fanned by strong winds, he said. Firefighters from Montegut, Bourg, Bayou Blue, Coteau, Grand Caillou and Village East were called in to help.
It took 50 firefighters about an hour to control the fire and four hours to extinguish it.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation but witness reports suggest it may have originated in the kitchen, Thibodeaux said.
