anyone done it?

my boat weighs about 3300lbs on the axle (backed it on to a scale when no one was looking ;) ) and i would like trailer brakes, but don't want the expense or hassle of hydraulic surge.

the reason i'm asking, is my wife's uncle put electric brakes on his boat trailer about 5 years ago, and as far as i know he hasn't had any problems with them.

fresh water only, and of course, he unplugs everything before dunking the trailer. then waits a while before hitting the road.

i can get into some electric brakes for about 150 bucks, which is worth it. even if i had to redo them a time or two, hydraulic surge type brakes will set me back a little more than 400.

any thoughts?

I've got electric over hydraulic on mine and that's truly the way to go for a boat but that'd set you back closer to $1k. Heck, if it works on your uncle's trailer and it's fresh water only... go for it...especially for $150.

thanks for your thoughts!

yeah ... EOH would be the cat's meow .... but as you said, i'm balking at the 400 ish for surge brakes.

i'm thinking i dont have much to lose, other than the 150 bucks and my time.

I run plain painted electric brakes on my trailer. I sprayed everything but the pads with boeshield. After 2 seasons, they work fine. I will replace them after this season. About 70$ for new ones.
