Very strange weather that afternoon in a very small area.

almost all of the pilings on tangier island are driven with the human body. It is called "shouting" poles and has been done this way for centuries.

Pizzacutter,
You got my curiosity up and I had to do a search as to why it is called "Shouting"
I found this:
http://www.tidewatertimes.com/RogerVaughan-August2011.htm
The harbor entrance is lined on both sides with a colorful array of small crab shanties stacked with pots, nets, and other gear. Many of them have shedding tanks for crabs. All of them are built on pilings that have been set in the shallow water by hand, a remarkable feat given the hundreds of pilings one could count. A team of men stand the piling up in the mud at low tide. One of their number climbs into foot straps hung over the top of the piling and proceeds to jump up and down until the piling is set. Locals call it “shouting” the pilings, possibly from the whoops of encouragement from his gang as the jumper labors.
Very interesting how things come about.
I love the shore. Everyone know it's a different world there.
Thanks!!

My son and I have been part timer tangier islanders for many years. There are many unexplained sayings, phrases, and nicknames. It make the unique dialog even more intreesting. We have been in on many teams of pole shouters. The photo I posted was misleading as we were doing it the easy way, from a dock. It is often done in the water with waders on. (low tide is a must). 3 guys in the water, and 1 or more on land, dock, or sometimes a boat.In the water the 3 guys get the pole in place. 1 guy gets in the stirrups, he is the "rider" he bangs a little until the pole is set. The the 2nd guy gets in the stirrups with him, the pole is between them. the 2nd guy is the "shouter" he gets a rythum going like "uga, uga, uga, uga" and they start to drive the pole. The guy on the dock is the "guider". He sometimes has 1 or more ropes tied to top of pole to assist with guiding. The guider is calling out "to the easterd--to the southard" as he helps keep the pole straight and in line, and he calls out when to stop (you can go too far quickly).
Many poles can be shouted in one day. .

Wish I had my camera. Got the grand tour on Wednesday flying in to BWI. Came off the Atlantic at Cape May, over Dover, Denton, Easton, Miles River, up to the Bay Bridge, up to east of downtown Baltimore, north of town then in to BWI.

If you do get out of the boat and happen to fall in that water, be prepared to get lots of medical shots :o

Went to that lighthouse back in the '60's - was abandoned even back then. You could WALK to it at low tide.
Great pics! ;cool;

The WaterWitch and the Wicked Witch are both owned by a Tangier Island waterman. His ex-wife asked if he would still keep the boats named after her when they were divorced. He said........Sure! and that is how they got (re) named.
I am not sure where they were built but they are both actively used around Tangier. 1 for scrapin, 1 for potting. Doubt if they ever been up to Hoopers.
