I thought you guys might find this interesting. I took this picture at the Port of Rochester in Rochester NY. I have seen it opened up out on the lake and it moves, as you would expect with that power.

Palm Beach Sheriff have that same boat with 4 300's on it... Never seen it go above 25MPH they typically use it as their floating "command center" at the local sand bar on busy holidays.... I got stopped by a coast guard boat for a safety inspection last night (same one) and it had 3 300 Verados... I asked what top speed was and they said "They aren't allowed to release that information"

I'm guessing you've seen BSO's badass command boat parked in the port. It's diesel and last night they opened that thing up across the port. It roars and is pretty fast too!

That was my first thought as well. I hope they get some good use out of it, but I haven't seen it do anything other than patrol around. I guess there is something to be said for an intimidation factor.

I sea trialed the same boat for Customs and it had 4 Verado's on it It topped out about 70. The longest they have had a Verado last is about 275 to 300 hours before they blow. I'm glad I'm not a Monroe County N.Y. tax payer though. There is no need in the world for that boat up there, especially in a Sheriff Dept. I'm not even sure why Customs needs it. Coast Guard maybe but those things are a huge waste of money. Once the Customs boats had some time on them I had a follow up conversation with a few of the guys who run them. Every time they go to intercept someone, they dump what ever they had because they see that monster coming a mile away. By the time they get to the "bad guys" what ever they were after is long gone.

There is a Coast Guard station in the port too and all the CG boats have much more 'reasonable' power. Basically the same boat but with a couple of 250 Hondas or a similar configuration. I guess the Sheriff had some use it or loose it money.

I was hoping someone would post those lifts, although I think you caught less than 1/2 of the entire flotilla of boats there. I count the tax dollars spent on all of those motors every time I pass them. The worst part is that they started the yearly county trailer fee .. for improvements for boaters, however at Phil Foster Park the only changes I seen was the reduction of trailer spots, the addition of a new government building. The removal of day docks, for the addition of all of the LEO boats, and of course increased enforcement writing even more tickets.

Yup thats the one, usually sitting still in the middle of the shit-show at pnut island on major holidays... Memorial days they had the "Whale Wars" annoying ass alarm on the front of it and they were playing with that all day making people ears bleed  . Most of the PBSO Marine unit are great guys tho, was talking to a couple yesterday on their brand new flats boat (with Verado 300 on back ) and they told me they are getting 6 new boats this year (3 flats, 3 30'+ CC's).

Lotta tickets won`t pay for that. Someone got shot at the day docks, so it was a logical choice to put a processing center there.

The tires on that Texas boats trailer cost more than some of the boats in the for sale section. It's just crazy the money these guys are wasting. I love it when I see a police dept boat going full throttle one way then a uscg boat flying the opposite direction. Seems like a phone or radio call could have saved a lot of time and fuel.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that your news sources consist of ESPN and maybe the sports section of the newspaper (no, scratch that, you don't read a newspaper), and inform you that they just lost two of their firefighters when they were ambushed responding to a call. Does this mean I can't talk badly about Indianapolis anymore?

The Gov is not broke, we are being robbed and deeply indebted, all under a ruse of heroes, safety and security. And it is by design and will not change.
Does a credit card company desire its cardholders to be debt-free? No, hopeless "customer" indebtedness is their business model.

The new Park Ranger boat in Ventura Harbor running around the Channel Islands is the same as the first picture in this thread but has tripple Yamaha 350's. I know one of the Rangers and we always talk when I am out at the island. They upgraded from some smaller ribs (one with 2x 90 Yammies, and one with 2x 150s) - big upgrade.... The first time he pulled up to my little 15 footer in the new boat, he jokingly asked if I wanted him to tow me on my wakeboard behind his new boat... after a moment of consideration, I politely declined....
Many of those are built near my turf. Very sweet... http://www.mooseboats.com/

I was in the USCG on Peanut Island back in the late 80's. I was deployed with Customs and patrolled from Lake Worth Inlet to the West End (Jack Tar back in the day). While running the west end cut, I and several other Customs boat received incoming fire from dopers. We were also fired upon by the Bahamian Defense Force who shot first and asked questions later at that time. We also chased a lot of Lacey Act violations (illegal catches from Bahamian waters) entering the US. Not to mention the smugglers and decoy boats running go fast's blacked out at 70 mph. I also spent 20 years in Florida Law Enforcement so I have a little more knowledge about this subject than the average person.
1. Without a 50+ mph boat, you are simply gonna get outrun if no air support is available.
2. Most boats you see are bought with Federal grants from the Dept. of Homeland Security.
3. Most of the grant money comes from cash and property seizures by the Federal Government.
4. The influx of grant money was due to 9/11 and the realization that our ports and waterways were vastly uncovered by sparse USCG assets. Since 9/11, port security has been identified as a potential easy target for terrorism due to the lack of "visible" assets. These bad ass looking boats are used to intimidate just as much as they are used for practical purposes. In other words, you might think twice about challenging these boats, when an officer floating around in a 1998 22 Cobia might not put the fear of God into you quite as much. I agree that tax dollars are wasted, but I think we should look at cutting out free Obamaphones and free health care to crackheads before we cut border and port security.

Ok, #1 is the premise for all of this out of control spending, but 2,3 and 4 are the problem.
2) So if it comes from the federal gov, it's "no cost to you". Reminds me of the daytime TV commercials trying to get the old folks to get every kind of motorized wheelchair, or other contraption because it is "no cost to you".
It's free. Nobody has to pay for it. That's great.
3)God help us if we spend what little extra cash we get to PAY FOR THE SHIT WE ALREADY HAVE, and haven't paid for. LETS GET NEW SHIT.
4) The argument, "Before we cut this, we should cut that"; so NOTHING gets cut, and never will. We're already borrowing 40 cents out of every dollar, but lets spend like money like we're ignorant ghetto trash.

I never stated it was "free". Nothing is "free" with government, I agree. I am simply stating where the majority of these funds derive from. I pay taxes just like you and there is waste everywhere. I am simply stating that I would cut a ton of B.S. programs geared toward lazy ass moochers before I would cut border security.

I know you didn't say they were free, FR, and I'm sorry if i used your post as a platform to rant.
My point was, if we do get get some "unexpected revenue" from drug bust confiscations, do we use it to try to pay off dept, or put the money towards something we really need, like better squad cars or ambulances?
No, like spoiled little bitches we get cool stuff that makes us feel good about ourselves.
Imagine you're racking up 40% of everything you buy on your credit cards. Then you get a little extra money with a side job; a few extra bucks.
Do you pay down the card, or maybe put some cash aside for a emergency fund? No, we're down at the gun store looking at ARs, even though we already have a mini14 that we purchased on credit.
I'm told that once your in "so much dept", you just forget about it. You "give up on it". When I see things like the Feds giving money for stuff like this, sometime to counties that just have small bays and rivers, I see that stupid, greedy little bitch at the gunshop looking at ARs he doesn't need.
Sorry to rant again, and it's not at all aimed at you. You were just educating us on how the system (doesn't) work.
Our government will NEVER get a grip on spending, and this thread just another example of that. We should cut entitlements AND quit giving money to counties for crap like this.

Ranger88,
You're right, government spending is irresponsible and completely out of control. BUT, the problem isn't the grotesquely over priced and underutilized equipment (which is also a joke on the taxpayers). THE problem is the size of government. Equipment is a very small percentage of the budget compared to salaries and benefits.
Example:
A governemnt employee retires and receives 60-80% pension,
Then we rehire and that person eventually retires and receives 60-80% pension,
Then we rehire and the first two are still alive.
Wow, that adds up quick, but wait... the pensions are transferable to their spouce upon their passing, OUCH!
Get this, Federal government workers reportedly averaged more than twice the salary and benefits of an average private sector worker. Even more unbelievably, there are fully 459,016 federal workers who make over $100,000 in salary – one in five federal workers.
Sorry to ruin everyone's day,
Tom
