Wanting to put a GX1700 in the electronics box on my CC. Will I need an external antenna for the GPS to fix from the box? Can do, rather not. Still sounds easier than running connection from e-box to dash HDS-7 for a non-GPS VHF. What do you think? I guess if I have to run power up through the t-top, maybe running a wire back down isn't a big deal. Was thinking about having a redundant GPS on the VHF in case the HDS craps out, but I don't want to be any more complex than necessary.
Which option is cheaper? GX1700 in e-box (with antenna as needed??) or GX1600 routed to HDS7?
How about I just ask what you all would do and leave it at that ;)

sobxoutdoors,
The GX1700 should not experience any issues receiving the GPS signal in your electronics box. See the link below from northwave161 who installed the GX1700 in an electronics box. northwave161 stated, "I also bought the GX1700. It's a high quality unite. There is no better radio out there for the money. I mounted it in a metal box under the t-top. It acquires GPS signal with in 30 seconds of turning it on. This unite replaced an old Icom radio that pooped out on me. Here are some pics."

I'm not a radio guy, but that is a nice surprise! I would have thought it would be a semi-line of sight deal. Thanks and sold.

I would not recommend one for use in a metal e-box. I think your best bet is a GX1600 and run it to the HDS unit. However, if you don't mind a little gamble, the GX1700 may work perfectly fine in your ebox. A fiberglass e-box would certainly be fine.

I went 1600 and HDS 7. Took 10 minutes to hookup and works perfectly. I took the $70 I saved and spent it elsewhere.
