Jim, my wife dropped my Garmin GPSmap 545 S and broke the screen. :bashhh:
I need to replace or repair my GPSmap 545 S. What are my options, repair the 545 S, or replace with a GPSmap 546 S, 740 S, or 720 S? ;?
If you recommend a replacement unit, rather than repair, can l use my present transducer for the 545 S on any of the newer GPS's 546, 720, or 740?
:banghead:
Thanks in advance
Melvin

I would send it in to Garmin. All they want is $270 for the repair of it http://www8.garmin.com/support/outofwarranty.html
A new one will cost you way more than this.

Jim, I want to thank you for your honesty and suggestion to curtail my overall cost.
On the other hand, I am a little apprehensive about sinking money in although a good but obsolete GPS.
I reviewed the Marine Electronics Q&A with BOE Marinequestion and answers and made a decision to buy the GPSmap 740.
Since I already have the GPSmap 545s transducer, should I buy the 740 or 740s, is the difference between the 740 and 740s, one comes with a transducer and the other without, or is their internal circuitry different?

The 740S is what you need. It does not include the ducer. The one you have will work. The 740 has no built-in sonar. So you need the 740S for sure.

Jim - Given the fantastic rebate on the G2 Vision map card, you don't think that the 720S with the G2 Vision is a better move? At least until the rebate ends on 7/8.
I have the 740S with an Aimar transducer and it is an awesome unit.

Jim, I see two 740 GPSmap Chartplotters on your online listing.
1. Garmin GPSmap 740 GPS Charterplotter
Part #: 010-00835-02
2. Garmin GPSmap 740s GPS Charterplotter W/ Sounder
Part #: 010-00835-03
I do not see, nor can I find a 740s without/sounder.
At any rate, if I order tonight, when could I expect delivery? I live in Edgewood Md. 21040

Is the Aimar transducer that much better than Garmin's 740S transducer, if so what are the advantages of the Almar?

Melvin -
The shipment won't go out tonight, BOE is in Maryland as you are so I suspect that an order completed tomorrow would get to you before the weekend. I recommend that you ring Jim in the AM and discuss your options. All of the your options in the 720/740/720S/740S/Airmar transducer/Garmin transducer space are good ones.

If the Airmar is that much better than garmin's transducer, I could repair my 545S and mount it on my bow mounted trolling motor.

545s replaced with 740s
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I replaced my Garmin 545s ("due to a broken screen my wife dropped it") with a new Garmin 740s. The NMEA 2000 devices shown on the 740 are as follows;
1. Evinrude / BRP Evinrude V-ETEC EMM 5311818
2. Lowrance EP-65 R Fluid Level 1543870
3. Lowrance LMF - 400 Evinrude 1821034 - Model #: 1.0.0, Software 2.1.0 RZ 502, Serial # 1821034
4. Lowrance LMF - 400 Evinrude 1638851 - Model #: 1.0.0, Software 1.7.0 RZ 21, Serial # 1638851
5. Lowrance EP-85 R Storage Device 1940881- Model 1.5.0 Software 2.1.0 RR 77D Serial # 1940881
Also, I have a gfs-10 fuel sensor that was installed via cannet to the 545s, so far, I have not connected it to NMEA 2000 network. My question is; do I really need the gfs 10 now? The 740s receives fuel usage data from the engine's computer via NMEA 2000 network. Would the gfs 10 be redundant or am I missing something? At this point, the gfs is still on the boat but not connected to the NMEA 2000 network. Should I leave it on the boat and connect the NMEA cable or just remove it entirely?

You could use the GFS10 for fuel level. Otherwise it would be redundant. I say pull it out. But keep it in case the Lowrance EP-60 ever poops the bed.
