Replaced my trailer brakes last weekend. Besides busting my knuckles trying to loosen the rusted nuts and bolts, the job was actually pretty easy and I changed both wheels in about 3 hours.
But I thought there was supposed to be a cotter pin in the configuration somewhere. Neither axle had one. I looked, I felt the spindle for a hole where a cotter pin should go, I didn't see one.
Is there supposed to be one? Are my wheels going to fall off?
Help!!!

I've personally never seen a spindle without a mechanism to keep the spindle nut from working loose. A cotter pin/hole has always been always part of the spectrum on my axles.
On some bearing setups.....right behind the big nut there is a washer with tab(s) that bend over the nut to lock it in position.

There was a washer, and I did pry the little tab between the slots.
But damn, I must be losing my mind because I remember when I checked the brakes last year, replacing a cotter pin. But I don't see how I could have gotten BOTH brakes replaced without having to remove the pins.
Think I'll make sure I upgrade my Seatow to include road coverage just to be safe.

The spindle threads must have a notch or form a "D" to keep the tab washer from turning. I can understand that.
