Boating How-To’s - Are washdown pumps rebuildable?

Haven't even pulled it out yet and don't know brand but are these things rebuild-able in general? It turns on but little to no pressure. Just looking for opinions before I tackle the job.

Shurflo pumps are rebuildable. If it's the motor, however, might as well buy new ... ;)

Call Depco Pumps in Florida. They will tell you if yours is and give you an estimate. They do beautiful work. Also a great source if you need to replace it.

First you have to be sure it's not a power problem. Is the battery hot? Next, try to back flush the pump by forcing water backward with a garden hose. Don't use too much pressure. Then flush from the pick-up and see if anything comes out. I've had this happen to mine before and flushing with a garden hose dislodged some stuff and the pump worked fine after flushing.

Well took it apart, Shurflo. Pump itself comes apart nicely actually. Clean it up going to reinstall and see what happens.

Another trick I learned years ago is to put loops in the water lines going into the pump and coming from the pump. Make the loops go up, then back down to the pump. This loops form traps to keep water in the pump at all times, thus the insides of the pump never dry out. I've had the same boat for 12 years and only went through two wash-down pumps (Surflow).
