Hi, has anyone used the Navionics GPS app for their smart phone off the coast of MA. I fish Mass Bay, C.C. Bay, S.W.B. and the G.O.M. Is it any good or is it junk? Thanks Joe.

Yup, I have two one for fresh water and one for the salt. Both work great. I use them mainly as back up or primary when in the skiff. Very detailed information.

Next question, Does the Casio G'Zone Commando work with this app. It is not listed but, when I called them the told me it may or may not work. What kind of answer is that in this day and age?

Joe I just downloaded it last week. Detail-wise it's a NOAA chart. I'm using it on a Droid X. Only problem I've had is that out of 10x playing with the app, it has "Force Closed" about 3 times. I think it is because I was zooming and panning too quick. For $10 it's good to have it. For a free App that is more dependable...check out "Earth NC Lite". It is minus all the frills of the Navionics one but IMHO it's more stable.

I am using Navionics for the iPhone and am pretty impressed with it. I have been holding off on buying a real GPS for my Mako because I have it - waterproof case and a way to keep it charged out there and you're good to go. I like how it downloads the maps locally and doesn't need cell reception to use the GPS.

I also read in one of the reviews that somebody bought a marine LCD monitor, mounted it on their console and plugged their Android into it via HDMI - max $200 chartplotter on a big screen, not a bad deal comparing prices to Garmins etc.

...all the marine grade LCD monitors I've found are up in the thousands $$$. It's a great idea - I'd just be interested in knowing where you can pick-up a quality LCD marine monitor for $200?

Another one to try is "Marine Navigator". It lays your gps location on any NOAA chart. It's very simple with minimal extras but free. I run it on a Droidx with out any issues. My normal GPS unit's LCD died this year and this came in handy.

I've used it on my iPhone and have been loving it. Sure beats those paper maps I have and a heck of a lot cheaper than than a real chartplotter. Perfect for using around Boston Harbor.
You should check out memory-map. It's free for android phones. I heard good things about it and for free it is worth a try. Not free for iPhone so I went with Navionics instead.

I use it on my iPad, along with two friends who use it on their iPad. Love it. Great as a larger screen and also a second opinion.

I bought a 19" marine flat screen for 200 bucks from Defender Marine. I would think I could use that as a monitor. I am going to buy the app and try it out. I will report on how it works next week.

Do these include charts for free?

Memory-map? Yes I believe so but you should check for yourself - they have a website that gives the full description

I just searched the google market (play) for "Memory Map" and "Memory-Map" and came up with nothing more than a memory manager. Please post some more details and maybe a link if possible

PS. Lets post up some more Android stuff. I am tired of hearing about all this proprietary apple garbage. I have a waterproof Motorola DEFY that is just begging for some charts. ;) LOL

Again the disclaimer: I have not actually used this app but ran across it when deciding which one to get. From the reviews it looks like the maps are(or were) free to download

A lot of us sailboat guys are using INav-X on an IPad which can be mounted to a railing on a center console. So long as you get an IPad with 3G then you have built in GPS. Voila! A big screen cartplotter for about $350.00 with up to the minute rastar charts which incorporate the lates NTM's. If I were mr. Gamin, I'ld be nervous.

of course this is assuming you already have the $700 iPad which all of a sudden doesnt make that chartplotter so cheap. ;)
