Whaler, but I'm a bit of a Whaler bigot, I've owned 5, from 13' to 19'.

Cape Horn makes the best offshore capable 17 -- go look at one next to a boston whaler and take a ride
the BW will also be twice as much

Personal preference. I just traded a 2009 170 Montauk for a 2012 Cape Horn 24XS. While the Whaler is one hell of a boat (pick a model, they're all fantastic), I upgraded to the CH for many many reasons. I love my CH as I did my Montauk, but wanted something that wouldn't pound me to death in the slop and that I could take further offshore. I almost pulled the trigger on a 2011 250 Outrage in Nov, but for $150K, I just couldn't do it. My CH, with electronics installed, came in at half that and it's one hell of a capable boat. Granted, I don't have all the storage that there is on an Outrage or the port and starboard fish boxes, but I have what suits me. I don't need lots of storage, I put on the boat what I need for the day as well as stuff for any contingency. It comes down to personal preference. Take the time to research both. Get on both. Figure out what it is that you want and need and what you are willing to spend. In my opinion, both are fantastic. Should you have any detailed questions about the CH, you can call the factory (in Milton, FL) and ask for Tyler. If you get their voice mail, he's very good about calling you back. Also, search Cape Horns on THT to see what other owners have to say about them. Same for Whaler. I'll tell you what, even though I plan to keep the CH for many years, I'm already thinking of my next small flats/inshore boat. I can almost guarantee it'll be another 170 Montauk. Good luck. Your decision is a nice one to have.
