Last year I posted a thread pertaining to the migraine headaches I was suffering with.

In January I went to see yet another neurologist. He started my on a drug cocktail of inderol, elavil, and depakote.

Wham bam thank you mam!

I have not had a full blown or even a near migraine since January.

Starting dose of drugs depakote 1000mg/day (500 am - 500 pm) 120mg/day inderol (60 am - 60 pm), elavil 50mg/day at bedtime.

These meds stopped the headaches in its tracks. Immidiate! Within a week!

Now, with the Dr's guidance I have, cut the inderol dose to 0, depakote to 500mg at bedtime, elavil 25mg at bedtime.

After having 3 and 4 headaches a week last year, it's like I am alive again.

Positive news!! GREAT.
Does he/ do you know what you trigger(s) are that brings them on?

I'll send my wife a link to this thread so she can follow it.

Great news. I've got one now that been hanging around for 2 days now. Not yet full blown but all it needs is the trigger

Be very careful with Depakote it can be really tough on the liver. The Maxalt I use has been working pretty good to stop mine in their tracks.

They scare the hell out of me. A few hours? man your lucky. I literally have minutes, I start seeing shooting stars and I run for the Maxalt. If I'm lucky a little blurred vision and pain for 30-45 minutes and the maxalt will kick in.

twentynine,

That's GREAT news - few things can ruin a day more quickly than a BAD headache! :nono: Hope you can get better and drop some more of the meds, eventually.

I took Elavil for nerve pain for awhile and put on a lot of weight. That stuff made me crave carbs in a way I cannot describe! I got off it and lost the weight.
About a year ago I started taking Cymbalta and have nothing but good thigs to say. I hate taking anything but I have had 7 spine surgeries, spent 3 months in a wheel chair, had to learn to walk again, etc etc... and I have some residual nerve pain that just beats me up. If the Elavil has side effects you do not like, ask your Doc about Cymbalta. It is a simialr drug primarily prescribed for depression/anxiety but has a side effect of decreasing pain.

Triggers?

I had a bunch!
Food- bananas, citrus, peanuts, pecans
Weather- cold fronts passing through in spring and fall
Stress
Lack of sleep
To much sleep
Diesel fumes

That's about all I can roll off the top of my head.

Side effects.

With the depakote I had some weird vision type things, a little stomach upset, all side effects seemed to go away after I had taken it for a few weeks.

Elavil, I have been taking varying dosages for a few years, initially prescribed by a nuero dr for migraines. Makes me sleepy that's why I take it at bedtime.

Inderol, it's an old blood pressure medicine. I am a 120/60 guy to start with. I did have a few dizzy spells. Off of it now.

I never even had minutes!

Wham--- literally felt like I peed in a light socket.

Aura right away, from a small spot in my vision to near blind.
