The National Marine Fisheries Services is holding two meetings in Larose (tonight) and Belle Chasse (Tuesday) on the whether TEDs will be required for all skimmer trawling nets. The odds of TEDs being required on all skimmer trawling nets is 100%. I wonder if otter trawl nets will be targeted in 2013 or 2014 for TEDs or extinction.

When will the NMFS actually take action against the Menhaden fishery? The by-catch of speckled trout, redfish, tarpon, sharks, croaker, and other fish are astronomical and this industry is completely unregulated. The NOAA and NMFS continue to ignore the elephant in the room while imposing draconian measures on recreational fishery.

With the pogie fishery shut down in the Atlantic they will decimate the population in the gulf.

Exactly! I know couple of people who work on the pogie boats and they said their boat inadvertently slaughtered hundreds of Tarpon during the fall last year. The innocent by-catch of redfish, trout, etc can be replaced but the loss of Tarpon is tragic because those fish live for 60 years. You knock out large spawning class fish like this and you further harm the fishery across the Gulf, Atlantic, and Carribean. People want to blame Mexico for helping knock out the Tarpon fishery but Louisiana is just as much to blame.
