I recently repowered(300 Verados) and rewired my 2006, 34 Yellowfin. It had 4 gauge cable and I went to 1/0. I also added a battery isolator, and separate house battery switch as per my mechanic.
My second trip out, My key pad began flashing, and my 2 raymarines flashed until almost being completely dark.Everything pretty much crapped out. When I tryed to hail some one on the vhf, I got back a loud squelching niose.I brought it back to my marina and they said it was a bad isolator.
A couple trips later when I turned on my livewell, my DSM lost its connection.
Yesterday I lost everything again. I noticed the ground from my house battery to my starboard battery was hot to the touch.
Today I went down it it was the same. I had everything hooked up to a charger to no avail.
My mechanic thinks I have too much load on my house battery, and I disagree. My friends with Yellowfins have the same set up, with no issues.Any feedback would be great.
thanks

:rofl::rofl:

Is this ProLine Brad???

I bet abovwe comment made with tongue firmly in cheek....

For the OP...what issues did you have BEFORE you attempted the rewire??

And that 1/0...was it marine wire? Properly crimped with the right tool?

Have all those connections thru the isolator and main switch been checked. If you tighten the posts too much, you can create a bad connection...

My mechanic said my Charger went bad, and shorted everything out.The fuses on the batteries were melted. I personally dont believe it.They are doing tests

Why did you rewire? Were you having probs prior to repower or just your mechanics hunch? I repowered my 05 YF with 300's and everything works perfect (2+ years now since repower). I have a 3 original batt setup. New batts were the extent of changing out any electrical. Hope you get it dialed in.

Some Basics (just my Opinion)
1) 1 AGM battery per engine
2) At least 1 house battery
3) Use VSR (or ACR) and NOT old style isolators from each engine battery to the house battery and you can cross connect the engine batteries in case you have a bad alternator in the future
4) Battery charger should have both the positive and negative leads fused to each battery (engine and house)
5) Use 2/0 cables
6) Only run the engines on position 1 of a 1, 2, both battery switch.
7) All engine batteries need to go to the Mercury Power Steering isolator/combiner for the power steering pump
8) all non essential electronics (radio, stereo, chartplotters, depth/fish, etc) should be off the house. You may want 1 VHF radio off the main engine batteries too

Hopefully this gets you started.

Just bc it looks good doesn't mean its worth a damn.

I rewired because Yellowfin had rigged my boat wuth 4 gauge wire in 2006. My local Verado guy said that is why I was having voltage issues.
I put 300's on it in December, and went to 1/0 wire. They also put in an isolator and a separate battery switch for the house.

Negative wire connecting two batteries beeing hot is a very bad sign. Something is wired resulting in your batteries seeing a series connection.

Where are you located?

My mechanic thinks I have too much load on my house battery, and I disagree.

your mechanics right, one house battery is far from adequate.

Boat is a 2006, you have repowered, and your mechanic has at least partially rewired - how does it being a Yellowfin have ANYTHING to do with it anymore?

Wiring up a center console isn't rocket science, it sounds like someone who did some of the work above didn't know what they were doing.

I'd love to know what is putting "too much load" on the house battery.

We had a 32 yellowfin come in with a blown charles charger,FWIW it does happen. And although yellowfins wiring is really neat and pretty, I have had issues with broken sockets on electronics because the wiring was so tight. Don't get me wrong, I love the yellowfins, but Wylie, if your listening....SERVICE LOOPS!

Don't fluck around One of the first yellowfin posts I read on here was of a 36 that burned to the waterline. I never read the cause however 500+ gallons of fuel + highly flammable platform+ overly hot electrical system + 100 miles offshore= bad frigging day you could have avoided

U mean 4 gauge wire run over top the fuel tank with zero wire protection isn't a good thing?
