The Joint. I think it is rated in the top ten BBQ places in the US, its not in the best neighborhood, but MAN its good food.

Too many places to narrow it down, but based on family activities and restaurants I'd go the to D-Day museum and eat at Cochon Butcher or any other number of places in the warehouse district.

There are soooo many good restaurants in new orleans the decision can be paralyzing. I've been to nola many times and visited jaqimos in uptown a few weeks ago. Get there early, like 545-620 for little wait.
The food was amazing and the restaurant was busy but still retained a close feel.

Wow, you have some great choices so far. Cochon, Katies, Jacques imos are all top notch in my opinion; however, you may have a tough time having a "family dinner" at Jacques Imos due to the extremely large crowd around the bar. Once you get in the back and seated, the atmosphere calms down a little bit.

How old are the kids? What is your price range? Lots of good places that are "off the grid" if you are looking for something relaxed. If you are looking for something a little more upscale I wouldn't look past Brigtsen's.

To touch on something I saw above - Ive never been to The Joint for BBQ but damn it has some good reviews. I looked up the address on google maps, and is that really where it is? The street view shows a mini-mart

They just moved. They used to be on Poland Ave. and moved to Mazant St.

After visiting Texas and eating some pretty good BBQ we went to NOLA for a day. Found a place called Dookie Chase that had some good home cooking on the a buffet. Shrimp creole, fried chicken, roast pork for 18 bucks with dessert. It came highly recommended, deservedly so.

Dookie Chase is a New Orleans Institution. Go there for lunch, but don't venture to that neighborhood after dark. The same for The Joint.

I live in NO and the first place that comes to mind when someone says family dinner is Mandina's. You can ride the Canal steetcar up to the door as well so the kids will enjoy that. Try the Trout Menuiere with fries and a cold Dixie.
Make a trip uptown for a poboy at Domiliese's - get a cold mug of Coors draft and a shrimp poboy with gravy on it. Wash the kids up in the sink at the end of the bar and then take them to Audubon Zoo/Park.
The Dday museum is something special if the kids are old enough to appreciate it. The American Sector is Besh's most family friendly restaurant and that is a good way
to experience his cooking.
Above all, enjoy and get out of the Quarter to see the rest of the city.
