Lots of dog lovers on here so I thought I'd ask.

One of my dogs, (just like all of my previous dogs), doesn't ever look at the screen.

My Golden mix mutt however actually watches the TV. As soon as an animal is on the screen he's trying to play with it. If the dog runs off screen he looks around the room trying to figure out where he went.

Is this common?

My cat has the same taste in TV media and when he watches my computer screen and tries to catch my mouse pointer, I go to youtube and put up a video of cats playing/meowing or a bird or mouse which really gets him going. Totally hilarious !

Through the years I have seen our dogs kinda watch TV, I thought, although I heard with older TVs that may not have been possible.. In the last year we have acquired (read wife fell in love with the dog) my son's dog as he needed someone to watch it for a couple of months. The dog's name is Chuck (Short for Chuck Norris), go figure. Anyway he watches the heck out of HD TV. He is a terrier/pit bull mix and will will always want to play with any animals (many dogs) that come on butr will also then try to play with cartoon animals (really). After we yell at him, he will walk around trying to find the animals that were playing on TV... It even goes so far that when he hears music for certain commercials he will come from the next room because he knows an animal is coming on TV... HE KNOWS THE MUSIC!!!

Mine seem to enjoy watching nature shows in HD. They don't really pay attention to anything else, but will be locked to the screen if something with dogs is on.

A little help, please! I have been told by many people, including several vets that dogs cannot see the subject matter on the t.v. screen in the exact manner as humans do. I have been told that they see images more then exact figures and that fast movement is where it's really at for them.

I believe that there are actually videos made specifically for dogs....;? I think these appear to be blurry when we look at them. Sounds like a complete scam to me, but I really don't know for sure.

Does anyone know if this is simply an urban legend or not?

In a word yes......my old Rottie would chase horses across the screen and goin into the other room looking for them, he would chase around the screen even if it was zoomed way out like looking at a mountain goat from one mountain to another......or if it was a close up and the animals head was bigger then he was, there was no doubt about it he was watching it......my lab will watch sometimes but no where near like my rottie......

No, but my daughter-in-law's dog "River" loves to play games on her Ipad. I think he was helping her with Scrabble here.

Our dog has never had an interest in what was on TV, she has always acted like it wasn't even on.
My sisters last dog could tell when an animal was on. People, cars, scenery, whatever could be on but as soon as an animal came on especially a dog, her dog would go wild.
That dog absolutely would watch TV.

Funny, search dogs on TV and I got Rachel Maddow. Go figure.
Anyway I ran across this clip.
Get through the 30 second commercial.

So then I looked a little further.
Some other clips.

Alright then, I have a test for the dogs (owners) that pay attention to the TV and those that don't, you may want to try this also.

The Law and Order theme music, either wait for it to come the TV or go to the link provided and see the dogs reaction, if there even is one.

Theme music.

Report back with your results if you would.

Our little Yorki watches every move of animals on TV with a staring reaction unless we pretend to pet the on screen dog, cat, etc.. Then he goes nuts.... with jealousy I guess. But other times we'll be watching a movie and out of the blue he's watching just like us. He definitely sees and reacts to TV images and sounds.

My lab will sit and watch for 10-15 minutes at a time. She sit straight up and just watches. She will get a little animated when other dogs come on. I will snap a pict next time she does it.

Mine goes nuts any time anything with four legs comes on tv. Dogs, cows, giraffes, even cartoon dogs....

there's no doubt he sees what is happening on the screen.

We were down in the movie room last night and we were watching a large T.V. and (Audie 'Murphy') our dog was right there watching. One of the movies was that Robin Williams where's he's the funny student doctor and he had those squeky clown shoes on like Murph's toys sound and he was all up around that tv wondering who the hell had one of his squeaky toys. If there's a door bell or a knock on the door as part of the movie he goes in to attack mode.

My fetriever rarely pays any attention to what is on TV but is fascinated by the ipad.

She will occasionally notice if it's animated. The one thing on TV that would get her attention was the Tivo startup animation. (tivo thing bouncing all over somebody's living room)

A traditional ding-dong doorbell sound will send her flying to my front door, which is funny because since I've had her I've never had a working doorbell. My buddy's wife raised the puppies, I told him he might want to find out just how many people are dropping by during the day when he's at work. :)

My cat used to chase F1 cars from one side of tv to the other. Now he's old and fat and can't be bothered.

Neither the dog or the 2 cats pay any attention to the TV, but they all just about flip out with the surround sound when I have it turned up a little loud. The cats will run around wondering what is causing the different sounds. The sub woofer literally scares the hell out of the dog.

I decided yesterday to plug my camera into the TV and then took some video of my dog. Of course, he could see himself on the screen and so he started barking at himself.

I then played the video back to him of him barking at himself and he started barking at himself barking at himself, which I recorded as well.

Then I played the video of him barking at himself on the video of a video of him barking at himself on the TV.

Of course he started barking at himself, barking at himself, barking at the video of himself.

This is when my brain exploded.

My hound loves TV. I come home after work and find her sitting on the couch straight up, like a person, arm on the armrest. If She's watching Law and Order, she won't get up to say hello. I'm totally serious. I'll take a picture today and post it tonight.
