Great looking hull! Can you explain plank on frame to me and how it compares to cold molding?

Thanks

Strip plank on frame is a dying art when it comes to boat building. There are only a few builders that still know how to do it. You can't teach this in class room! This technique is passed down from earlier generations. My father taught me and his taught him and so on. Lessons always begin with Pops coming in with his stick rule, a piece of plywood for writing down measurements, and we start to put her together. Alot is by eye no blueprints. This hull is layed up with the keel first frames are 2x10 juniper frames 16'' center. Strips are 1'' by 1'' epoxy clued in between each strip hand nail with 2 1/2'' stainless two in between frame one in frame. Honest it dont take that long to plank a boat, tis one took about a week to plank. Once planked sand with dics sander fill with epoxy all nail heads 5 coats of resin to soak in wood then fiberglass two layers of 12-08 cloth miss match cloth then sand, sand, sand and then sand again lol. I have worked long side pops for 12 years and there is still a lot that learn. Cold mold has blue prints it’s like one big puzzle. We all go through the same steps of finishing them but different in construction. Also if you look at our bow where the knuckle chime is that’s where the transition from her bottom to her sides is, ours is a nice sleek transition where just about all cold mold use a s-frame design to get a little more room down below but I’m sorry cold mold guys I think that is unattractive. Strip planked is lighter and if fiberglass would for some reason stop being made we could still build boats cold mold is depending on fiberglass we have boats that are work boats like trawlers that are 60 years old still going. When Noah built the ark he did frame plank hull

Can you share what you feel is a fair price at this stage? Also, rough estimate as to how much to finish it out from this point forward? Assume a big single diesel express. If you'd rather PM that is fine. Thanks!

Twin seven marine 557s, I bet it'll do 80.

Very nice looking boat! I have to stop looking at this thing, I would love to make a huge center console with a hull like that.

Curious -- If you're able to disclose more information about the 31' model you built I would be curious as an idea to do the same with this hull. I don't like that console and would prefer a center console style.

Your 31 with outboards:

feel free to PM me if you'd prefer to not show publicly. Weight, beam, price, performance.. etc. I'm sure with twin 350s this boat would be a great performer.

Thanks

I just keep seeing this Custom Carolina with a strong single diesel. What type of horsepower do you suggest for this size boat?

Hot Rod is one of their boats in OC MD, it is a beautiful boat. I like the idea of a single diesel as well.

Yes Hot Rod is one of ours. Thanks for the post she was a beauty. She also has a good crew taken care of. The 450 would be a good fit. Hit good numbers in speed also fuel
