Hello boaters,
I have a 1999 Johnson 200hp outboard. I have cleaned out the carbs. upon replacing them I can not get motor to idle below 1000rpm without it stuttering and eventually shutting down. Any help would be appreciated.

All vacuum lines not reconnected or sucking more air due to a crack in the line(s)?
When at that high idle, spray some WD40 on the lines and if any are bad, the rpm will change.

Was it running fine before you took the carbs off to clean them?

Ok. Well if it was running fine before than obvioulsy you did something while cleaning them. 1st thing, are you sure you put the carbs back if the same position as when you took them off. You probably know that each carb is tuned for particular cyclinders. Putting them back incorrectly will mess up the mixuture for each cyclinder. 2nd thing, did you adjust the set screws when cleaning out the carbs? sounds like maybe they were not put back to the their factory settings after your rebuild.

fisheye23 makes a good point about carbs being tuned to specific cylinders, or at least banks of cylinders. Another question- did you torque each hold-down bolt/screw to factory spec in an "X" pattern? Helps to have a small torque wrench for that job, as my Johnson carbs have some bolts with a spec of 120-144 inch-lbs.

Carbs should be rebuilt with new kits, cleaning does nothing for worn out parts.
Plastic bowls easily warp if tightened too much.
