I have an 06 Powerstroke 6.0 that has been flawless for the first 80k so I switched to Royal Purple on a recommendation and waalaa I have an oil leak. My mechanic looked at it and thinks it is coming from the rear main but after some research I have my doubts. I switched to Royal Purple 2 oil changes ago and about 5000 miles after the switch she is leaking. After googling I have discovered that the Royal Purple may be the issue. Royal Purple has the ability to clean oil build up out of an engine and I am thinking that since it is so thin I am leaking.
Have you heard of this??
Suggestions?

Gottarpon, IMO I'd post this question to the guys (gals) on Powerstroke.org under the 6.0L forums, I'm sure somebody there will have an idea. Good Luck....
BTW: I use Rotella T6 and love it, the engine seems to like it too!

Again, what weight oil is the RP that you're using? That may have an effect on the leak if you're using something thinner than 5W-40/15W-40. But again it just might be a bad seal.

I've ran across this with synthetic oils in the past. If you have an engine that has run dino oil exclusively, some of them will begin leaking shortly after the switch to synthetic.
Something about the molecules being smaller and able to slip through places that regular oil cant, on top of the cleaning that it does. Additionally, regular oil causes seals to explnd more than synthetic.

could be the rear main or it could be that the snap coupler on the hi-pressure pump has been rubbing on the back cover and put a hole in it

Not unusual, especially when the user switches oil bases as mentioned above. Go back to dino oil.

If there's a leak to be found, synthetic motor oil will find it--especially on vehicles with a few miles on them.
Just switch back to dino oil and see if the leak stops. Otherwise, you'll have to spend the $ to have the leak fixed correctly.
You can switch back and forth between syn/dino without any issues.

The synthetic will make it leak, instead of spending money replacing seals that really don't need to be replaced just switch back to conventional 15-40.

A friend of mine had the same thing happen to his diesel after switching to synthetic. He went back to conventional oil and has never had another leak, this was 5 years ago.

I switched to 5W-30 synthetic on a 5.7L gasser and had oil consumption issues on the order of one quart every 1,500-miles. I went back to a 5W-30 synthetic blend and had zero consumption over a 6000-mile change interval. It not only seeps, it combusts.
