I am going to be going to the Vineyard in June and have one set up with lead core. Most captains use wire line for trolling. How much wire do I put on the reel for trolling in about 20-30 feet of water? I figure I would back with 60 pound mono and use a florocarbon leader of about 50 pounds. Will be trolling jigs and tubes by the Hoot.

200ft of 50lb monel should do the trick. I have 2 wire rigs, one with 100ft sections and one with 150ft sections so that i can cover a variety of depths. The rule of thumb for wire is 10ft of wire for each foot of depth.

Thanks,
I usually drift but in the spirit of cooperation don't want to ruin the trollers so I'll just join the pelleton.

I use at least full 100 yards of premarked 50 monel with regular braid backing on my wire rods (w/ roller tips) . If the fish are 30+ ' down, only 200 ft isn't going to cut it with a lot of lures unless you add drails ahead of a long leader.

All 6 of my wire reels are spooled with 300' of soft monel, tiny spro swivels connect the wire in 100' shots. Been running tubes this way for many years. There have been occassions in deep water when fish are holding bottom to have all 300' wet but that is pretty rare. If you fish moving water you can throw the 10' to a foot of sink rule out the window. Running with the current will cause tubes for example to go down much deeper than running against or even crosss current.

I run two 125 foot shots with 10 feet of darcon in between.... jig on the dacron not the wire...

NO LEADER . . . Tie right to wire. For 30ft depth . . . 300ft Minimum . . . whatever it takes to skip the bottom.

I got my monel and put the 50# backing on the reel, about 100 yds. When I tried to join the backing to the monel with an albright knot the knot failed when I pulled it tight with my gloved hands. The mono was cut by the monel. How should I join my backing and leader to the monel. It seems pretty sharp. Yes I am using a leader.

I rechecked my knot and it was incorrectly tied. It's amazing how many knot books get the diagrams wrong.

Seriously???? . . . Did you say you are using mono for backing? You need to be using Dacron or heavy braid . . . and NO LEADER . . . DO NOT USE A LEADER . . . REPEAT AFTER ME . . . I will not use a leader with wire.

Really? Why no leader?? My wire outfits are backed with black dacron, then 3 shots of 100' wire (10' of dacron as connectors to jig on) and then 20' of 50lb test Mono. My hookup ratio has been Great when snapping parachutes or dragging tubes this way. I get a more natural action to the lure, and no wire fatigue leading to breakage. Oh well, just me.

Fishing the sand at the cape is different than the ledges in RI. Common to bump the sand bottom at the cape which degrades mono quickly. In RI, would be a foolish mistake
I set my rigs up pretty much as you do. I do 150 then 50's for a little more precise depth control but otherwise the same. Unless rods are being set up for specific depths, or if one never jigs, I personally think there should be dacron breaks. 200# cortland braid 16X would even be better as the dacron does degrade over time.
