My 15 year old 582 CRT finally took a dump, screen went out. I have been looking at the 585 as a possible replacement. I loved that old 582, with a transom mount ducer the thing would read bottom all the way to its max range of 1500 feet. I don't want to spend $1500 on this new unit and have it suck. Regarding transducers, I would like to go with a tilted element 600 watt dual frequency if it will be enough?

What other electronics do you have now? if it's a garmin unit 4xxx series or higher you could go with a GSD24.
If you have to have a dedicated sounder then the 585 is probably the way to go.

585 or 620 will make you happy. 1kw on the 585 and 600w on the 620. I have used both and they are great machines. Transom mount ducer no issue.. that is the set up I had on my 31 fountain and loved it.

The 582 is a 500 watt rms analog unit...good for its day.
The FCV585 is 600/1000 watts rms fully digital...better processing and increased power capability.
The 600 B60 is should give you the same basic depth ranges that you are having now.
But if you went with a multi element 1 kw ducer you would have far great capability with target detection and depth.

I want to have a ducer that will enable me to use the sounder to it's full extent, I don;t want a sounder that can go to say 2,500 feet, but I can;t get a reading because the ducer is not adequate. I do a lot of bottom fishing and deep dropping in the islands/keys, and will be doing more day-time swordfishing once I have a good sounder, already have the boat setup for an LP 24 volt real that I use for deep dropping, so a good sounder is important.

Your options for good 1kw transducers reaching deep are:
Tm260..transom mounted.
B260 ..fairing or pocket mounted on boats 30' and larger. Pocket mounted on smaller boats.
M260..but depths vary due to hull thickness and type , etc. (800' to 1200' ...can be iffy deep)
Flush mounted SS264N pair...not recommended on boats over 30'

I would like to go tilted element if possible as I dont have space for an oil bath and I dont want the big fairing block/thru hull setup, I like my speed! What is the model number for the 1 kw airmar tilted element?

If you are going to a single tilted unit then the B164. That is 6 times more sensitive than the B60.
the SS264 tilted pair is 50 time more sensitive than the B60 but very pricey.
Your other option is to pocket mount the B260...that also is 50 times more sensitive than the B60.

How do i get my 585 to read anything over 1,000 ft. I know it has more range but the graph only goes to 1,000. I have a B164
Thanks
Jim

It will read out your total depth on the lower left side of your screen...just keep your range in Auto.
