Cngratulations! Starting sometime this summer, those who upgrade their smartphones will be forced into Verizon's new Shared/Tiered Data plans. This on top of the $30 upgrade fee.

Why? Because according to Verizon EVP & CFO Fran Shammo, "it generates more revenue for us."

As if I don't already pay them enough.

We pay 189 a month for two smart phones from us cellular. Now they want to charge 25 more per line to add tethering to my plan. I say no way. We are going back to dumb phones. All I need is a phone that works and can text. I can get two dumb phones with unlimited texting for 99 dollars a month. The Internet on a smart phone sucks anyway.

I'm grandfathered into unlimited data with AT&T.... Every time I call to change something, I have to make sure it doesn't screw that up. It won't be a pretty day when they take it from me.

Straight Talk. $45/mo for unlimited everything. Been with them for a little over a year. Just bought a smart phone and activated it on their plan. Its pay as you go but you can set it up for auto refill so there is no difference but I dont et a bill every month I cannot figure out. I just get a charge on my card for $48 (with tax). Same bill every month. Can cancel at any time. NO CONTRACTS.

If Verizon does go through with this I am going to bet it's only a matter of time before At&t does the same thing. The amount of greed coming out of these companies is nutty. At a time when companies are pushing cloud services the data plans out there are shrinking. At 4G speeds 4GBs can come up pretty quickly.

After thinking it over I've decided that I'm going to pull the trigger on the upgrade for two of my lines now. I'll get two more years of unlimited data that way. Then who knows. Maybe Google will finally get their isht together and launch their own network.

My problem isn't that I persoanlly need a smartphone, but it's that our internet and email policy at work is so strict that I use my own smartphone to get things done. Being a very specialized agency of the NJ government you would think that we'd be allowed to develop our own policies. Friggin bureaucrats.:banghead:

AT&T has been doing this. I toasted my iPhone 3gs last May, and when I went to get a new iPhone 4, I could stay with the unlimited plan, but couldn't use a few of the features I really wanted to. So I switched. They also have started cutting back the speed on the unlimited plans if you use a certain amount of bandwidth.

So...it's here, you're just going to have to decide what you are willing to pay for.

Yes. Once they roll out the shared data plans this summer they will do away with unlimited data altogether. Once you cycle through your contract period, they will force you into a shared data package or a tiered data package and eliminate you from unlimited.

Thanks for the info BB. Well, the good news is I have almost two years before my contract expires again. My son is still on my plan. His company gets a discount for using Verizon. If not for that, I would probably leave them. You can bet i'll be looking at other options when that time comes. Verizon is the biggest and i have gotten fairly good service with them but their customer service sucks. And the folks making decisions for them are showing that they really don't care about the customer. Typical of big business now days.

I hate to say it but when that time come tht is going to see a hell of a lot less of me. I might crack, right now I'm waiting on 4 different people for 4 different things, tht keeps me patiently entertained.

Verizon's Statement on the Future of Unlimited Data

As we have stated publicly, Verizon Wireless has been evaluating its data pricing structure for some time. Customers have told us that they want to share data, similar to how they share minutes today. We are working on plans to provide customers with that option later this year.

We will share specific details of the plans and any related policy changes well in advance of their introduction, so customers will have time to evaluate their choices and make the best decisions for their wireless service. It is our goal and commitment to continue to provide customers with the same high value service they have come to expect from Verizon Wireless.

Time to flood VZW with emails protesting this change. They've tried a couple other changes recently and protest got them dropped. I'm also contacting my Congress people to see what their opinion of this is. Maybe with enough uproar this can be stopped.

That sounds about right. I pay $467 a month. We have my wife's family on our plan (they can't afford phones). I believe it is 5 smart phones and 1 dumb phone.

Sounds a little high unless you use a lot of data.

With their share plan;
3 smart phones $120
Voice/Text/6 GB data $80

$200 plus fees and taxes is probably $225

8GB is a lot of data for a telephone, unless you are using the hotspot.

Do you keep up with your data usage?

Again, that sounds like a lot of data for a telephone.

$40 for each phone $160.
$100 for voice/text/10 GB data.
Plus fees and taxes.

2 smart phones unlimited talk and text 4gb data and home phone with verizon $190 a month. i have looked at all the others and nobody has the coverage that verizon has. if it were not for the coverage i would change also i guess thats why they are more pricy.

I love the Verizon shared data plan. We have something like 6 phones on it, 4 droid tablets, 2 ipads. I think I pay $189/month for all that. If we go over our allowance its just another $10/$20 gig. I am not sure of the exact #'s, I just know its way cheaper than if we had to have data plans for each of these devices individually.

I travel the country. Try using Boost mobile, ATT, and Cricket in many places I have been and you will be shit out of luck. Zero to sketchy signal at best. It is common on my jobsites for co-workers to share my phone while I am on site, due to them having one of the mentioned services.

Correct, I have Verizion mainly due to coverage. Until I upgrade, I still have unlimited data. I average 7-9 gb a month due to using it as my primary internet on my home computer. (hotspot)

That being said, with the share everything plan, the more data devices (non-phone) you have, the more attractive it is.

Gotta disagree, I use to travel the county about every other week on Sprint and never had big issues. Verizon does have overall better coverage in some fringe area but Sprint's more than adequate. Plus if things are as bad as you claim and 3 out of 4 carriers dont' work, oh well. it can wait until I get back to civilization frankly.

Pretty much all the places I go are rural (some in the middle of nowhere). Yes, there are some places I go that my Verision doesn't get a signal. A matter of fact I am about to go to very rural Oklahoma and my company has already got me an ATT phone, Verizion does not work there.

There are a million possibilities, I am just stating my experiences. I should have been more specific.

It may depend on how you travel. If you fly you go from city to city. I drive across country and need my business phone to have service as much as possible. I pay for the Verizon network. The new Ala Cart menu the came out with makes perfect sense. Easy to understand and only variable is the data. $220 for two smartphones with hotspot capability and 1 wireless aircard. Unlimeted voice and text. 10 Gig data. Think thats fair. Especially since I remember $400+ phone bills from 14 years ago.
