I'm in the process of setting up my new to me aluminum trailer, changing some bunks around and swapping out some zinc bolts for stainless. Most of the steel brakckets on this trailer are galvanized and currently look to be in great shape. My question is, would thees parts last longer if I blasted off the galvanize and refinished them with a good epoxy primer and paint? I have a strong background in industrial blasting and refinishing...asphalt plants, mining equipment ect..ect...It would take me no time at all to blast this pile of small parts and have them redone with top notch materials. It just seems to me that a lot of galvanized stuff I see nowadays has rust on it, so I'm wondering if a thorough refinish with quality materials will last longer than something that was most likley galvanized in China. The trailer will only be seeing salt a few times per year.
Thoughts??

I would be more worried about the dissimilar metals in contact causing galvanic corrosion than the hot dipped galvanized rusting. Might be easier and more effective to drop the galvanized brackets and insert an thin sheet of inert material to break the connection. I think you can order PTFE sheeting from McMaster Carr.

Galvanized finished are far superior to paint to prevent corrosion.
Why would you remove the zinc finish? If you want to paint it, prime and paint over the existing galvanized finish.

With paint you may get crevice corrosion.

go to an ace hardware store for their loose fastners, talk to them about where they get the hot dipped galv stuff and what experience they have.
the box stores stuff is cheaper chinese stuff

As you know, galvanizing is done by dipping the steel part in a tank of molten zinc. The process is basically the same both here and in China, with the difference being how much zinc is left on the part. A heavy coating of galvanize works great for preventing corrosion, where a light film of galvanize does not do much. If you have the time and ambition, take the galvanized parts to a local galvanize shop and have them properly done as opposed to the ding wah how quick dip process.
