Important changes to Fire Island Inlet!

Just got this info

Tuesday, April 3, 2012
*Fire Island Inlet has been remarked! *Buoy numbers 1, 2, and 3 are at the same locations as last year. Red buoy #4 however is more east than last year and very close to the beach (only about 25 yards off). There is also a new Red buoy #4A that acts as a gate with Green Buoy #5. It is pretty narrow, (maybe 15 yards between #4A and #5) and #4A is just behind #4 and real close to the beach. So, on your way inside the inlet coming thru #4A and #5, leave the #6 buoy slightly to starboard then head about 25 yards to the west of buoy #6. Once you are passed the #6 buoy then dog leg to the east to get inside like always. Although things are a little tighter this year (between #4a and #5), it seems that the depths are greater in the channel. As long as you stay within the buoys you should not encounter depths of less than 8ft. As always, things can change over time (especially the location and size of sand bars), but as of 4/3/12 these are our observations. We will do our best to update Fire Island Inlet conditions as they change.*

any chance you can run through this path on with a "bread crumb trail" or "track" and post up a picture? I will be going through there in a week or two and would just like to see it before if possible.

fireisland,
You just got that info today? It is dated April 3 which is over a month ago, I wonder if it is still valid as that area often goes thru some drastic changes this time of year..... ?

I haven't been in FI inlet yet this year, been out to Morriches a few times...

Thanks for the info!!!!

I went through a couple weeks ago on a friend's boat and it's pretty clearly marked and no issues with water depth. We had a calm day and slack tide, but it seemed to be in better shape than the past couple seasons.

Hey John!! ;)

FI Inlet is well marked right now, and plenty of water between the bouys going North or South (In or out) the inlet. I came in on Sat. eve just before low tide and I had 7' under me at the shallowest spot. But it's a narrow channel and will not last long. There was a 3' roller on it, and it was breaking all over the place.... going to be fun this summer.

And FYI: There were giant Bluefin Tuna 500-1000lb'ers jumping (complete air) all over the bunker pods outside the inlet on Sat. 1/2 mile off the beach!!! Never seen anything like it!!! Really cool site.
