I assume its a safe enough place to visit but wanted to make sure. I've never really heard yes or no about the place. We are travelling in a month over there for a weekend fishing trip (fly to Puerto Vallarta, stay and fish in Punta Mita).
Is the USD a common currency? Any suggestions on places to eat in Punta Mita?
Thanks for all your help

We live in Mexico and travel a lot in our boat, mostly in the Sea of Cortez. We are now in Cabo San Lucas. Over the past ten years, we have never been the victim of a violent act.
Yes it is safe. Your chance of getting bumped off by a crazy narco is zero.
Like being in any big city (Puerta Vallarta), don't flash a lot of cash, look to score on drugs, pick a fight in a bar, ect. If you look for trouble, it will find you.
You can go out for dinner, walk the streets at night, go most any where you like, have drinks in a bar, go anywhere fishing in the ocean and be perfectly safe.
Punta Mita is about 25 miles from Puerto Vallarta. It is more of a small town rural experience.
I hope you score on some big tuna. There is a hot marlin bite here in Cabo but few tuna, dorado or wahoo.
I am sure you will enjoy yourself and have a good safe vacation.

Handn is completely correct. I was in Punta Mita in September, and I felt safer there then I have in parts of California. Just dont be an idiot and do things you wouldnt do here in the states.
Punta Mita has a ton of great restaurants right on the beach. Get a margarita at Margaritas...theyre spectacular!
And go fishing with Lora! He's the man! He's regarded one of the best Captains in PV, and runs top gear on his boat, including Stellas.

You will most likely be safe.........you are a tourist...........
But....was shocked to read Bullshipper..........who lived on the Mainland of Mexico for over 30 years had to say about the lack of Law and Order in Mexico these days.
Am a Lifelong Californian Gringo who loved going to Mexico......many times to Puerta Vallarta but I have absolutely no trust in the system down there to relax and enjoy a vacation.

Exchange your cash - peso is about 13 to 1. If you use the dollar, they give you 10 to 1 - easier math... Love PV, go every year. PM is more ritzy!
