Full disclosure: we moved from the beautiful land of maize and blue to the buckeye state in 1991, so I don't really have a dog in this fight.
There is this east vs. west schism surrounding Cleveland, so I figured I'd pick this forum to present my observations based entirely on a boating and fishing perspective.
Why would you opt to dock your boat east of Cleveland, other than to be close to it; and if that's the case, why live on the east side? ;? :jk:
Here's a bit of spreadsheet and guesstimate work:
Let's assume you dock in Eastlake, a recent post from West Channel Yacht Club posts dockage at $1,375 to start. I pay about that on the west side.
It's the mileage that makes me shudder:
The distance from the Chagrin to Kelley's north-end is 64.5 miles. Using the Black River as a west side point, the distance is 28 miles. At $4.00/gallon for fuel at 20GPH, running at 20 mph, it's going to cost over $500 to run from the Chagrin and just over $200 from Lorain when you calculate round trip.
This $300 variance is for just ONE TRIP!!!! Obviously, running from Vermillion, Huron, or further west is an even greater variance. 5 weekends to the islands during our 5 months possible is quite an investment.
Now, I know it's no fun calculating the cost of boating. I love my hobby and pastime, and I'm going to do it. But do you folks on the east side mostly stay around Cleveland? When we lived in Michigan (ah, to be a Wolverine again :) ), we did tend to run close to local home port, but mostly because we had lots of choices pretty close to home; and a week's vacation would mean a run of 100+ miles, but usually just once per summer. Finally, the fishing was never a 30+ mile run for any specie.

Better question would be, Why would you want to be from Cleveland and admit it.:bashhh::bashhh: :rofl:

Used to work in the puzzle palace in downtown pgh. You know the one . . . lots of crystal, and all the buildings begin with PP and end in Glass. It's a tough call, live in the 'burgh or in Bangledesh . . . Hmmm . . . flip a coin?

Easy on the CLE! Our waterfront development actually appears to be moving foward! I'm from Bay Village and moved to Shaker a couple years ago(getting married-had to). The west side is much better for boaters, more access to ramps, marinas, etc. We keep ours at Whiskey Island which is about a 25 min drive across town. Boating downtown is fantastic and will only continue to get better. That being said, if you want culture and a great commute downtown-East wins.

If the doctor told me I only had one day left to live my life. I would spend it in Cleveland for 2 reasons.
1) One day in cleveland would seem like a life time.
2) The thought of spending another day in Cleveland would make me want to die.

I don't care who you are.....that's funny!!!
Oddly enough though the only place I could think of that might be worse than Cleveland would be Steubenville!! hahahaha.........kidding (kind of)
As far as the thread goes I am not from Cleveland either, just stuck here for now. I prefer the west side. Its newer, cleaner, nicer, more sun, less rain, less snow, less snotty stuck up people, less small roads, and the list goes on and on....
And, if you are a boater, you are that much closer to the Islands etc...
But, due to wanting to be able to spend as much time in on and around the water we keep our boat right in downtown Cleveland. We went through the whole idea of keeping her farther west but found that we would miss sunset cruises and quick dinners on the boat during the week after work. It would be much more of a time commitment for us if we were to keep our boat farther out west.
Of course that is what works for our situation, your mileage may vary.

I used to keep my boat on the far west end of the lake and Anchor Point Marina. I found I was always running towards the islands and that is a long haul. It was to expensive 10 years ago, now it would be VERY expensive.
For the past 10 years I've been docking @ Bass Haven on East Harbor and Kelley's Island is a straight 4 mile run right in front of East Harbor.
As far as I'm concerned I wouldn't dock anywhere else, I love being around the islands. Not only is the fishing better, it's great to run over to Kelley's or South Bass for a cheeseburger and a cold beer.

Personally, I like keeping the boat closer to where I prefer to fish and that means to the west. I'd rather burn the gas in the car then in the boat.
By the way, you Pittsburgh guys, who came up with "The Terrible towel". That's one of the silliest things I have ever seen. Barking like a dog isn't much better though.
