Anyone ever drink this stuff?I had 3 shots tonight over sugar cubes, on fire, chilled, etc. All of it sucked IMHO and did nothing more than what drinking Crown would do to me.

I used to occasionally order it from Europe before it was legalized here. As I recall, it was min 70% alc, up to 90%. All of it tasted like licorice but some of it was quite good over ice. I never did the sugar thing, just sipped it. Read recently that high octane stuff is supposed to be big-time not-good for the body. :o These days a Hendrix extra-dry martini ... or two, is just fine.

That's what I thought, too....all the stuff int heUS is so-called Absinthe substitute, hence the crappy taste.
That's OK.....get a nice bottle of Metaxa Ouzo and approximate the experience.
There is a special Federal law against me drinking more than one shot of ouzo. My wife lobbied to get it passed.

We had a session on it one night over sugar cubes and the results were very interesting. One guy took a piss on a car parked in the garage thinking it was the toilet no matter how much we tried to convince him otherwise. Hilarious. Other stuff that happened that night not suited for broadcast here.

This bottle was supposedly a gift from someone travelling overseas. I like Jagermeister and thought it would taste like that- it did not....
Don't think I'll ever have it again.

We gotta bottle, did the sugar cube thing, the "loosh" or whatever, not impressed. I don't like licorice, so it did nothing for me either. The original stuff had wormwood in it, and god knows what else. No wonder impressionists/post impressionists saw things differently.....................

Absynthe was banned because one of the ingredients, wormwood, was believed to have psychotropic effects. After a couple years the manufacturer re-introduced the product without wormwood and named it "Pernod."
A few years back they found a way to extract the flavor parts of wormwood and now Absynthe legal in some places again (like Coke/cocaine). In the meantime, bootleg Absynthe has been available by steeping Pernod in wormwood.
And that's all I think I know about that.

I had some that "did something" to me back about 12 years in Aruba (it was from Amsterdam) I have had it several times since with varieties from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and some available here in the states.... None have given the results of the "good stuff"

US import laws have changed. Absinthe can be purchased in the US. I don't think you can find Absinthe with wormwood anywhere these days (and I have tried to find the "old recipe" in Europe).
Look at the recipe for a Sazerac - one ingredient is Absinthe - which maybe the smoothest way to drink your bourbon straight..
