Great Lakes - surveyor needed in ne ohio

I am looking for a surveyor and a Yamaha mechanic to check out a boat on Misquito lake near Cortland, Oh. The boat is a 2006 Hydra-sports 2500 vx with twin Yamaha f250s. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Closest place to Cortland with a Yamaha Mechanic is likely Sima Marine or perhaps Vic's Sport Center.

I drove to Niles and looked at a 26' 2002 hydra sport. it was a little out of my price range and size I wanted so I had to pass. I ended up with a wellcraft, still nice but that H/S was a super solid fishing machine. Just could not float it at this time. I am happy but like free bird said it looks like a nice boat. Good luck, let us know how it turns out. I have seen numerous H/S's on the water around erie the last year or so. Seems to be coming not just a popular ocean boat anymore. However, no dealer in the area means you really have to search to find them locally. Again good luck, hope it works out. Looks nice.

Drove down from Mi. yesterday and visually inspected the boat yesterday. FreeByrd set me up with a great surveyor. We are set up for survey/sea trial next Thursday.

Crank Troller, the 2002 h-s sits next to this one in the storage barn. These boats sure look like they can eat up some serious chop on Erie or Michigan.

I see you already found someone but let me say ive used greg group and found him to be VERY thorough. Highly recommend him.

And I would say that Greg Group provided the least thorough and most inaccurate survey of the 30+ I have paid for..

I have heard only good things about Mr. Group. If he is so bad why?? Please go into detail if you feel the need to bash the guy. With a comment like yours, it comes off as being bashing with no other statements or documentation to back it up.

A little delay in the process. Can't get the boat out of storage until May 2nd. Greg Group is the surveyor I chose. So far he has been great, no problem with the date change and he has already sent me the boats history.

Crank, I recognized the 02 from a cl ad during the winter. When I asked about it, he said that they were friends and slip togather in the summer. When all the dust settles, I will try to figure out the picture thing.

Mr. Group performed a survey on an '87 Blackfin 29FB I was buying in Ohio.

Some examples of the survey. "Batteries are correctly installed and properly held down" There were no battery securing devices at all and one battery lead had two ring terminals with a bolt and tape as a splice....

Moisture readings showed some moisture in decks and stringers.. When I called him to ask about that he stated "If you are worried about moisture readings in a boat this age, you would be better off playing golf.." Uh, OK Greg.. Sorry I asked a question. He never did answer the question.

When the boat arrived, the swim platform attachments were loose. When I wiggled them the #10 Screws fell out... Thanks Greg...

I was feeling around to run some downrigger cables and the area around the hawse pipes at the transom corners were completely devoid of coring except for the rotten bits that fell out... Good job Greg....

The windshield and side glass in the cabin were caulked with household silicone caulking and not very well. No mention in the survey.

There were more issues as well. I don't think the guy ever looked at the boat. Either that or ???

So if I want to say that he did a bad job for me I will go ahead and say that. He might do a good job for you but I think he is a poor surveyor and rude to boot...

Thanks for the input and your clarification. However, my question to you would be, how well did you look at the boat before calling the surveyor??? You would think most of the stuff other than the stringer issue would have been easy to spot during a simple visual inspection of the boat upon your intial contact with the boat. Not blaming you for not looking but it sounds like something you should have maybe walked away from even before calling ANY surveyor.

I have used Mr. Group before and was very pleased. I had my boat surveyed prior to the expiration of the manufacturer's structural warranty and he found a number of issues (some minor and some not) that were addressed by the builder under warranty. I have referred him to others and each was very pleased with his service (he looked at 3 different boats for one friend before my friend landed on a good one). The only complaint I have ever heard concerning him was price however I always chuckle when people gripe over paying a few hundred (at most) dollars more concerning a purchase of such expense.

Saw the boat in the water for a few minutes with covers on everything. ran it briefly...

Hired and paid without question at the suggestion of Freebyrd's boss....

Because he came so highly reccomended I trusted him. He failed miserably.

I had no time or inclination to find what he missed..... I was paying the "best" , expected an extensive survey and did not get that....

I really think he wrote it off an old survey he had done and tried to slide by... When I asked him a question, he bristled...

I am somewhere in the low 7 figures ( buying and selling) with SSM so please....

Only bad survey I have had anywhere...

Do what you want but I know what I got and it wasn't what I paid full price for...

sorry jasperdog, it did appear as if you got less than promised. That said, when most guys in our club are selling their boat and greg group is the surveyor they all say, " crap. greg group is doing the survey" when i had mine done on a 1986 31 Tiara. he gave me a 13 page written report with 45 items to be addressed, most nitpicking but still thorough. also a cd with over 100 photos, a picture of moisture readings at every bow rail stanchion and thru hull fitting. I was happy with it.

Now you resort to saying Please.....this is my experience in X amount of dollars. To that I say, who gives a crap. I could care what you buy and sell. In my years of boat ownership (28 years and 7 boats), I am pretty sure I have well surpassed that but do not have the time or ego to sit down and calculate what I spent. I do this out of pure relaxation and pleasure! Not look at what I spent. That is usually how people on the defensive get. Sounds like you may be one of those guys who does nothing but pay the other guy to figure it out and when it goes wrong complains about him. Which is fine. maybe next time you may actually pull the cover off when you go to look at something you are spending your money on. It's on you. I know when I look at a boat, I am down in every little nook and cranny I can find. Then and only then, if I feel the boat is good will I call the surveyor. Sounds like (well you admitted) you did not do that. So shame on you, don't expect to get the best from somebody else every time, it's the nature of people. I do not know Greg Group or have ever used him but to come on here and bash someone when you did not do your homework upfront causes me to get a little upset. This is the guys livelyhood and to bash him when you probably should have never called him in the first place, if you just did your homework would have saved everyone the problems. My call for fault YOU-50% GREG GROUP 50%

is the boat in question a dark blue blackfin that has a wood covered transom that went by the name of true blue? I saw that boat for sale and wanted to take a look at it but didnt get my chris craft sold before somebody bought it.

How did this whole thing go for you?????

Everything went great. No major issues. Mr. Group took his time and explained in detail what he was doing and why he was doing it. This was my first time having a boat surveyed, and I would highly recommend it to anyone purchasing a used boat.

If all the paperwork and wire transfers happen this week, it will be at South Shore Marina next weekend for bottom paint and engine maintenance. Hope to have it home by Memorial weekend.

Thanks to all THT members for the help, I will get pics up when I get the boat home.

Must be my well deserved criticism has had some effect.... Like he cares...

I will say SSM can paint a bottom with the best of them...
