I have to share this with someone else because my wife thinks I am nuts. I was watching Ax Men and have always thought that you can at least count on Discovery Channel and History Channel for at least some what accurate tv.

On last weeks episode- one of the pontoon boats stalls and catches fire. The engine that stalled was a mid 1990s Yamaha 20 inch. Suddenly it explodes into fire and became a 15inch Evinrude 3 cylinder 70hp from the mid 1980s. This is the engine they are pouring water onto and have to jump in the water to escape the flames. The fuel line, rigging and steering are not even hooked up when you freeze it on that scene.

The producers created the whole scene and burned another engine in its place. The rest of the episode they talked about how lucky they are they did not burned worse when it was all fake.

Shame on History Channel. I understand its for entertainment but then dont pretend its real.

Most of the time the first season seems to be pretty accurate. After that I guess they run out of material and have to make shit up! ;?

Bigfoot, ufos, Nostradamus, pyramid power - this is the "history" channel. What pisses me off is that people believe the crap they show, at least in part, because it is shown on a channel that proports to be educational. I don't mind if people find that stuff entertaining, just change the name of the network to the "magic crystal science fantasy alien conspiracy fake reality" channel. It would be nice to see more serious history, but I guess it doesnt pay the bills

The sad part is that 15inch 3 cylinder OMCs are rare and desired for the midsection and lower unit. I can understand burning a Force but that is just wrong.

Noticed the same thing on Swamp People last night. It must have been a THT member narrating 5-6' waves, when they weren't over 1' and crashing over the stern. Guy kept yelling "we're going down!"

The shots of the boat taking on water were so fake it was unwatchable. Too bad....

The first sign of the fakery on the motor burning up was the sound that was dubbed in when it stalled out.:rofl:

I caught a fishing scene from the show Ice T has with his wife, and they showed a 20 minute "battle" she had with a sailfish - only thing is in some shots she's using a left-handed reel and in others a right-handed. I think the show's producers figured everyone would be focused in her boobs and not notice.

Glad u posted that, that's the same thing I thought..notice the lack of black smoke...and there's not enough gas actually in the motor itself to "explode" like they show. I started getting a little Leary when Shelby all the sudden has so many hot relatives and assistants... Come on... Really?...and the "buyers" always showin up in fancy clothes and somehow they always end up in a predicament and getting dirty. They are ruining Shelby's character with all that crap..didn't mean to make boat forum into tv forum but boat explosion obviously fake.

Funny, but I noticed the same thing.

I guess that 'ol Rude came to them pretty cheap, unlike that 'ol Yammy...

More likely, due to it's shoddy construction the Yami vaporized in a matter of seconds, making for lousy television; so they substituted the ''rude, and with it's substantial makeup it burned for hours, giving them plenty of time for quality footage!

I agree to a certain extent but, even Deadliest Catch is a reality show and they do a lot of staged things. The only thing that is real is the waves and the fishing.

I used to equate Ax-men to Deadliest Catch but now I think its all bullcrap. That scene of the engine fire was not just drama for the camera but a carefully staged and rehearsed set up and completely fiction. I watch DC for the scenery, waves and boats.

TV has been pure crap for years now and I always thought History and Discovery Channel were the last safe havens from made up lies.

Most of the rigging work and shenanigans that occur on the landing decks and on the side of the hill is bs.

There is no way in hell any responsible owner/operator is going to allow that sort of thing to go on in the woods like they show. The timber fallers that I know would refuse to cut around shit like they show on that program. No one is going to chance felling a tree on top of some poor bloke.

People get hurt and killed around here all the time in logging accidents and it is just too dangerous of a profession to allow any of the shit seen on the show.

I saw that episode. I too, thought it was a Yamaha BEFORE the cowl was removed. Then, as you said, it suddenly became an older 3 cylinder looper, OMC. The fuel pump was hanging off, etc. I don't watch the show on any regular basis, but when I do, I see SO MUCH BS & mis-information it makes me laugh & shake my head. What a bunch of BS!!!

I looked at the clip, actually, it's even OLDER than that! It's more like a 1969 - 1970 model 55 to 60 HP. Look at the ignition side you can see the old style bracket that housed the old style Motorola Amplifiers. And, LOOK, the damn spark plug wires aren't even all connected!

It looks like they pre-burned it, for practice, judging by the looks of the powerhead. When he is cranking it, they play the sound, but the motor isn't even turning over! AND, at one point, after it turns into a Johnson/Evinrude, when curly is back there, it becomes a YAMAHA again! HOLY CRAP!! That just ain't right.

TheSkipper
04-07-2012, 07:35 AM
It looks like they pre-burned it . . .

I noticed that too - It looked charred before the fire started. Also, the guy driving the boat goes from not wearing any glasses, to wearing safety glasses, and then back to not wearing any glasses. The fact that he suddenly had safety glasses on sure makes it seem like a set-up.

All the shows are staged. Swamp people has become very commercialized too. This year all of them have new mercury, Yamaha, and tohatsu motors. One episode Troy jumps an island in a shallow water drive boat. Camera goes in slow motion and gets the boat name and motor perfectly on camera. The Troy says we could of got here without this boat. Think there not getting something for endorsing the products. It's good entertainment but I think there's a lot staged.

I caught an episode of Storage Wars doing this B.S.
On one show....they show a unit door being cut open and door goes up...unit is messed up! Next shot of unit, boxes are stacked nice and neat!
Another B.S. reality show!

Not only is it staged, some of the characters are as stupid in real life as they appear on the show. A guy from Washington State I worked with for about a year sent me this link last year.
