Ok, joking aside ... one of the best movies I have seen is a recent effort starring that new James Bond dude, Daniel Craig. It's called 'Flashbacks of a Fool'. Everything about this movie comes together in a way most movies do not -- the script, the actors, the soundtrack, the story-line, the cinematography ... it all compliments each other.

A remake of an ultra-depressing movie (and book): "On the Beach"

The original is a classic (1959), but I think the 2000 remake with Assante, Rachel Ward and Bryan Brown was a really outstanding re-do.

I am not a big Armand Assante fan but thought he fit the role of the Commander.

Fun to watch ... S McQ was a man's man. 'The Great Escape' was so much more memorable ... loved the motorcycle escape scene and the barbed wire fence. But this movie, 'Bullitt' was technically flawed. You wouldn't know that about the chase scene unless you are familiar with San Francisco. It drives us West coast folks absolutely nuts to watch it. :grin:

Just watched this again on saturday. Prob my 20th time. What a film, what a cast. Wikipedia said it only cost 6 mil to make. Thats like 20 mil in todays money. Perhaps the finest film of the 90s unless you are into tear jerkers etc. "The greatest trick the devil pulled was to make the the world believe he didn't exist!" Verbal Kent aka Kaiser Soze still spins me out.

Though another top film was Ghost with Patrick Swaze.

War (Jason Statham and Jet Li) is my primary nomination. Other under rated (if even rated) films I have enjoyed consist of (largely determined by hot female actresses, good action scenes, or appeal to my sophomoric and occasionally politically incorrect sense of humor):
Death Race 2
Gone Fishin'
Out Cold
Waiting
The Slammin' Salmon
The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard
and any late night B list Zombie related movie on Netflix. Some of that stuff really cracks me up.

Speaking of The Usual Suspects, I just bought it on blue ray the other day. I absolutely love that movie.

Sean Connery plays a British Spy who was caught stealing US secrets, the British government disavowed him, so he spend the prior 34 years in solitary in a US prison. He was impossible to keep confined, but they needed him for a special mission. I am going to watch again to be sure, but they never said he was James Bond (probably can't for legal reasons). Second (already mentioned once) is Dogma. You can spot someone’s Christian sect by their ranking of the movie. Anyone that went to a Catholic school will tell you it is the funniest thing they have ever seen. Baptist's will tell you that you will burn in hell for even mentioning the movie. Alan Rickman was priceless; "Tell someone you are the voice of God and they stare at you blindly. Mention something out of a Charlton Heston movie and suddenly everyone is a theology major. Millers Crossing was one of Cohen's Bros best~! Heavy hittin' cast and well built tension throughout.

This has been a strange thread because 9 out of 10 of the movies mentioned as "Most Underrated Movies" are listed in the highest rated or highest grossing movies of all times> ;?

But, the last page or two mentioned some good "underrated" movies. So, in keeping with the new trend...

Valdez Is Coming. I will have to give Burt Lancaster a new look as "Favorite Actor" based on this movie. Good western.

And how about Car Wash? I definately don't think this movie was rated on anyone's top 100 list. ;cool;

At the Car washing.....Working at the car was, yea... car wash.... the car wash....

Soldier, Kurt Russell, Virtually his only line in the movie, I'm going to kill them, I'm going to kill them all.

I'm surprised this one hasn't come up yet:

48 Hours (Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy)....was the first of the "violence plus comedy" movies and one of the few movies I've ever watched more than once or twice.

Another that is often a controversial candidate for threads like this:

No Country for Old Men...a chillingly weird movie.

The Lives of Others

The setting is the former East Germany under the commie times where the Stasi secret police is spying on everything and everyone.

Every American should watch this movie.

Good call on "A Fish Called Wanda", Kevin Kline at his funniest, plus Michael Palin too. Not sure if it's under rated though. My favorite scene from Ruthless People was the stereo store scene where the Judge Rheinhold character is trying to sell guy a stereo with giant speakers he can't afford. "And when you die, they can effin' bury you in them!"

"Drowning Mona" is another little known Danny De Vito and Bette Midler vehicle which is very funny.

No Country For Old Men" won the Best Picture Oscar, usually not a sign of being under-rated.

BTW, I was flipping throught the TV this morning and Millers Crossing was on AMC... I was 20 minutes late for work...

Ronin (1998) with DeNiro

definitely underated (didn't win anything) but probably the best car chase scenes (in Paris) of the day with a riveting plot.

Used Cars was hilarious; "I had to turn the hose on them!" referring to a bunch of nuns.

"And I knocked those bitches on they asses". Hilarious movie... Get Low is another great movie. Robert Duval, Bill Murray and Lucas Black are brilliant.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World-have to watch this with CC on, you catch so much more of the background comments, esp. the crew.
