I think most of them have VSAT, so you can have internet and phone access.

It won't be free.....

Call your cell phone company and tell them which islands you are going to. The ships cabin phone service can be $5-6 per minute and it adds up quickly. I use my Sprint cell phone and pay the international charge for short calls and even less for texts. If you are going to St. Thomas it's even cheaper, but just check with your cell phone company and you'll have a good idea of what it's going to run you. The cruise ship also has cell service that will allow you to use your cell phone but that is expensice too, so just wait until you physically get off the ship to make your calls. Have a great cruise. (ps-don't forget to call your credit card company and let them know where you are going so they will process any charges without any issues when you are in the Carribean).

Economically you'd be better off to bring your own Sat Phone.

Its a free account to set up. You do DL the software and create a username. Then you can call from one Skype account to another for free using a Wifi connection (and even have live video chat as an option). If you want to call a land line, you still connect via wifi but you can prepay and debit each call to land line from your account balance. The key is having a solid wifi connection.

All I know is NCL is really $$$$ and I didn't bother. A ran into a few who bought the internet package which was 30 min for something like $75.00. They tried using Skype but the connection was too slow.

Just talk with your carrier and explain where you are going. Then ask about adding those packages for the month. When we did it (with Sprint) we added two international packages and paid an extra $19 for the month and had no issues. Still weren't able to use it at sea but on 3 of our 4 stops we were covered.

Skype cost is around .02 per minute - by far the cheapest alternative, and the connection thru the internet is clearer than any telephone line or cell phone. Plus if your computer is new enough to have a camera, and the recipient's computer also has a camera, you can video talk.

I was on a cruise in December. I simply picked up my Blackberry and made phone calls and sent texts while at sea. The ships have their own wireless network. Your particular phone and service provider will determine how much the calls cost you.

I have a Blackberry on AT&T and I made quite a few calls and sent a bunch of texts which included a lot of pictures. I was expecting the bill to be an extra $200 but it was a whopping $24.00 for the use on the ship.

This was on NCL. We also bought the internet time so we could use our iPad for internet. It sucked and was super slow so we got a refund.

If you have an iPad and can hook to a wifi FaceTime is a good way the other person has to have an iPhone. I use it when I'm stuck at work to say goodnight to my kids you can see them and they can see you
