Here is something I learned quite recently that might help Lowrance HDS and SIMRAD owners.
From this screenshot you can see the chart speed between 50kHz and DownScan are very different (less than half the speed).
This makes it extremely difficult to interpret between the two screens as one always seems 'squashed'.
If your 50kHz is set to max ping rate and chart speed of 'normal', then I find that reducing the SideScan range to around 80 - 100ft (in this case) pretty much puts the two at the same speed.
You will however have to play around with the range to see what suits your system best.
