no EPIRB?

I read that story and that was my first question as well. For what they spent on fuel that trip, they could have had an EPIRB. Not only that, he lost his best friend of 25 years because of his cheap, penny pinching ways......I wonder if his friends life was truely only worth a couple of hundred dollars to him?
