I am seeking out the advantages of the Lowrance HDS gen2's (5 and 7 size) with side scanning vs the Humminbird 898's and 798's with side imaging??

Need info fast so I appreciate any input from users and brand experts alike.

My fishing style is soaking bait for striper and sturgeon, California Delta bass fishing and sometimes I troll for striper and trout.

I want a unit at the helm and the bow.

Thanks.

For sidescanning the performance of the two would be close to identical. When it comes to 2D sounder, chartplotter and networking HDS is far ahead .

For inshore it is a toss up but..."abbor" sums it up well.

The expandability of the HDS are awesome where the Humminbird are limited.

For anything other than inshore, go with the HDS.

Thanks for all the input guys. I narrowed it down to Lowrance and Humminbird because I was buying from Bass Pro Shops and they had some incentives going on that were ending today and I had some giftcards to apply towards the purchase. It really came down to the salesman's (John- Manteca, Ca. store, Marine section) familiarity with the two brands they carried. He is a Lowrance owner/user, but had nothing bad to say about Humminbird. His personal experiences and insights into the Lowrance HDS system swayed me in that direction.

Good luck with it...take the time to play with it extensively, or invest in the dvd tutorial. This way you'll get the most out of your unit.

I think both are great but hummingbird seems to be more focused on inshore/freshwater while lowrance is more inshore/offshore. I used nothing but hummingbird fishing bass tournaments years ago and have all lowrance since changing to offshore fishing.

You might look into buying a 3-year extension on the Lowrance warranty- about $200, as I recall. That should give you a 5-year period of no-extra-cost repair/replacement support from Lowrance. Lowrance is reportedly* charging $625 to replace an HDS-7 Gen-1 unit (6 months out of warranty) with a refurbished unit. That does sound like Lowrance's past practices for repair of non-current models. Hopefully, you'll never have trouble with the new electronics, but some people do.

Most gold credit cards will offer double manufacturers warranty as a benefit.

I do know people that sent in units for service and while there, they paid maybe $200 to trade up to the next size unit. Something to look into.

My card limits the extension of manufacturer's warranty to 1 additional year.

Lowrance used to publish their price list for non-warranty service. I can no longer find that list. It would be good to see the current list, not sure why it should be hard to find.

We have the humminbird 1198 and its the best unit we've had to date. The side and down imaging is a really cool added feature. Had Garmin and Lowrance units in the past and these units were really really good also, but the humminbird is so much more fluid and easy to use. Were fishing freshwater on lake erie so i can't say how they are in saltwater or really deep water. Deepest we fish is 150ft and the 2d is fantastic at that depth. We use a navonics platinum card for navigation and now humminbird has the interlink for great network capability.
Either unit you choose you will love. There both great units.
