I am definitely interested in buying a fishing kayak this spring, but I have no idea what to get in order to be able transport it on top of my car (2003 Accord). From the looks of it, I will need mounts and straps, or maybe a rack. Can anybody give me some recommendations, particularly something under $100?

A plane jane rack on top will work I've rented a couple of fishing kayaks and my wife a rec. Only use pull tight straps or you'll dent your kayak. My little brother has two with matching dents. Keep them upside down and have a flag bc a fishing kayak will stick out.
I got a bed extender for our kayak transportation. We have a pickup truck, but should also work with any car with a trailer hitch. Just storing them on the roof.
look up extend-a-bed in a google search.
Also check out austin kayak.com they have a lot of stuff and great prices.

I don't think an extend-a-bed would work w/ the OP's Honda Accord...
Edit - BTW, You can get styrofoam blocks or tubes (like pool noodles) and straps pretty cheap. They're fine for roto-molded 'yaks.

Just saw this:

Last day of sale, though! Act now!
i had the same problem except i drive a civic. my solution was over your $100 price but it works great!! i found a used yakama bike rack that fit my car. i took off the bike carrier leaving just the two cross pieces and bought two foam blocks to cover the bars and strap down the kayak on that.
then i found how hard it was to carry 7' rods in a civic so i went to the yakama website and ordered a snow-ski rack that would mount on the bars i have. now the rods can be locked in the ski rack and the kayak is carried on the other side.

My buddy uses something similar to this he got his at Walmart for about the same price its Reese brand.
He wrapped the bars with pool noodles and loads his kayak upside down on them.He then ties it down and its good to go!. I was very impressed with how sturdy the setup is it felt as strong if not stronger then some factory roof racks I have seen. His kayak is a Hobie outback and I believe his car is around a 2000 Accord.

A friend of mine actually has these and said I could have them, gave them a try but since my car is a 2 door there's not really any space for separation. Only about 3 feet between them which isn't going to be enough to support the 11'6" kayak I want.
I guess I'm pretty screwed since I have a 2 door car, never wanted one to begin with but was in a jam and had to buy it anyway. I wonder if there's anything else I can do other than having to deal with a trailer.
