Can you add the Simrad 3G or 4G to other brands MFDs? It's seems to run over ethernet cable and has its own blackbox unit before the MFD.

Thanks

(I presume you are referring to brands other than the Navico brands, i.e., Lowrance, Simrad, Northstar, B&G.)

I'd actually be surprised if you could, but I don't have an direct answer for you.

Usually there are software/system architecture issues, even if it can present the data to the "other MFD" via ethernet.

The 3G/4G radars have very different control parameters than other pulsed radars since it is a FM/CWI waveform design. Not clear how many of those are managed within the 3G/4G and how many within the MFD.

I'm always a little perplexed about how proprietary the marine electronics business is despite the NMEA2000 and ethernet networks. I for one don't expect that to change anytime soon.

Radar (and sonar) can't be shared between manufacturers since there is no standardized protocol for such data exchange over Ethernet. Even if such a high-speed NMEA protocol had excited using Broadband radar for other brands would probably have been difficult since the technology is so different from pulse radar.

Thanks, I figured it wouldn't work, but wanted to get some other insight. I also stop by my local shop and they said the something, you can't share between different companies.

Thanks, for the replies.
