Bought new wheels for my Camaro SS, wanted to get them painted but the cheapest I could get them done was $125 per wheel because of the labor time required to prep and mask off the wheels. Instead I had a local graphics company do a computer layout and used 8 year 3M vinyl instead of painting. I did this partially because if was much cheaper, but more so because I could remove it if I didn't like it.

I just got the wheels mounted last week and I'm just looking for some unbiased opinions on if I should keep the gold or go back to the original polished silver. My family is split on, my daughter loves the gold but my wife said it looks to pimped out in gold. I have had 5 people tell me how great they look while at stop lights, when getting gas, and in parking lots. Of course no one would come over to talk to me and tell me the color combo looks like crap. I went w/ the gold on my black Camaro because I love the color combination, and it's also the colors of the Pittsburgh Steeler's, if you aren't a Steeler's fan don't let that bias your opinion.

Just curious if more people like the gold -vs- thinking it's to pimped out and I should remove the gold vinyl. I won't be insulted if you don't like the gold so don't worry about that.

All that matter is what you like, that being said, I do not care for the wheels or the gold. I think the stock wheels are one of the best looking wheels on the Camaro especially the dark grey ones.

The stripe abruptly ending at the door jam caught my eye more then the wheels, looks like they forgot the rear fender.

Think I'd like to see some more chrome on the wheels.

Mac- My original wheels are the midnight silver that came with the 2SS option package. I like the original wheels also but I got the new wheels as a gift and I really do like them.

Obbayer- That is the way the hockey strips are made, I would prefer tham to be a little longer also but that's just the way they are made.

OK so far 0 for 2 on keeping the gold. :)

I absolutely love the new Camaros, haven't pulled a trigger on a 5th gen yet but soon. I've owned everything else but a 1st gen.

I saw a matte black SS here not too long ago, blacked out windows, black wheels, smoked headlights and tailights. Probably one of the most intimidating of the 5th gens I've seen. Not a fan of the wheels on this one but heres an idea:

http://hollywoodstatus.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/David-Beckham-Matte-Black-Camaro-2-550x259.jpg

Which led me to looking at this:

http://forum.lsxtv.com/attachments/1450d1245252794-black.jpg?stc=1

Murdered (blacked) out 5th gens aren't for everyone but black wheels and some window tint gets my vote.

RussH
03-24-2012, 12:12 AM
Chris- all blacked out is still an option I've considered but I want to do something different.

Floataboat- I like the looks of the Camaro's that have been lowered but from the guys I've talked to said it changes the ride. I don't know if that's true or not because I haven't rode in one. For a sports car my Camaro ride is great and very comfortable even on long trips.

Thanks for the comments guys, it would take me all of about 5 minutes to remove the gold from the wheels if that's the way I decide to go.

I like the gold and the stripe, mainly because it's not something you see every day. There are no shortage of chromed out or murdered out Camaro's on the road, so props to you for adding some variety.

If you didn't already have the new wheels I would say go bigger on the wheels, lower profile on the tires, and lower the car to get rid of all that wheelwell gap. As far as lowering affecting the ride, it definitely can, but it depends how you do it and with which company. Same idea as truck lifts, some of the cheaper ones will get you the height but ride horrible, and some of the nicer ones will get you the height and make a 3/4 ton ride like a Cadillac.

Leave it on for at least a while. I'd suggest leaving it on until say, you need new tires...you will know your mind by then.

Oh, and I like it! It should be a little brash and in your face. It's a Camaro not a Camry. If you can pull it off, I'd start sporting some 70s clothing too, perhaps throw in a gold chain or two and see if anyone comments...

Consider the source though...I like to play sports in 70s gear.

The Smokey and the Bandit comment had me sold on the look!

As long as the color matches the stripe I say leave it. Might look even better when the car is moving. In the meantime if the cost is reasonable maybe have the same thing done in black. When you get tired of the gold, switch over to the black. JMO

When I look at the pictures the first thing I see are two gold stars and maybe that's what you want. I would characterize the wheels as "blingy" yes but I also wouldn't say I dislike it. Keep in mind I'm "over 50" and a Mustang guy. I like the black and gold theme, where it loses me is the chrome/alloy in the wheel looks out of place and sends them to blingy. IMHO! The wheel should be mostly black with subtle gold accents to play off the stripe - like maybe just the inner sides of cutouts and/or gold calipers. No shiny silver at all? I'm guessing that would mean going to another wheel though. All that being said, live with it and see what YOU think.

Fun stuff anyway...

As I said b4, I'm not offended if you don't like my mod choices. I asked for honest opinions and that's what I wanted to hear. If everyone would have said it looks like crap than I probably would have removed the gold. I like the looks of the wheels, it's something different that I haven't seen on any other car. There are loads of blacked out Camaro's and the whole Transformer theme has been over done, but that's just my opinion. I never thought about the Smokey and Bandit connection until Flot mentioned it, that sure wasn't my motive. It's hard to tell but the hockey stripes and the wheels are the exact same color, the same vinyl was used for both.

As far as the wheels go I'm not going to buy another set, I looked for almost 3 years before I finally found a set of wheels that I liked and that were in my budget. There are other wheels that I like but I'm not going to spend $500 - $1,000 per wheel. Because of the Brembo breaks you can't just buy a set of wheels off of the rack, your choices are pretty limited. I always have the midnight silver wheels from the factory that I can put back on.

Any way, thanks guys for the compliments. Like em or hate em, thanks to everyone for giving me your opinions.

There are plenty of wheels off the rack that will clear the Brembo Brakes. You just have to have the right offset.

While I like the rims and the uniqueness with the gold stripe / gold inserts, I personally would have liked everything all blacked out, or silver stripe / silver inserts. Again this is just my opinion, and as long as you like it, that is the only thing that matters. I would not however have the silver inserts / gold stripe. I have put aftermarket rims on every vehicle I have every owned. For me it really about making my vehicle a little different than what you would buy off the lot, and you have definitely achieved that.

Exactly, I found wheels to clear the huge AMG / Brembo brakes on the wife's e63, it is all about the offset. If you look hard enough, you can find a wheel to work for just about any application.

Threelittlefish- Hey nice car! What size wheels are those on your car?

Finding wheels w/ the right offset was the problem. Maybe it's not a problem where you live but it is where I live. There wasn't a single tire/wheel distibutor that had anything in stock for my SS. I was reluctant to buy wheels from a picture but that's what I did. I would have much rather seen the wheels in person b4 I bought them. It doesn't matter now since I've already bought the wheels I wanted.

I also had fender vents installed. I seen a picture of a Camaro that had them and I instanly wanted them. Again it's just something else to make my car different than everyone else's.

Hi Russ,

That's not my car. I just looked at the Camaro forum and found them. It said they were 22" rims.

I have a Nissan Twin Turbo 350Z. The way to find wheels is to call the manufacturers of what you like and find a distributor. My wheels took me 3 mo to get from Japan. Most high end bespoke wheels are special order. It took me 4 years to build my car.

X2.....

Color is not that bad but with the stock ride height it looks lost. Drop it down .
Two inches would change the way that car looks. Not sure those are like the vette's but you can lower mine with a few turns of a bolt under the shocks. Best thing its free.
I'm like others. Keep it a while and see.
Look into the Foose Nitrous rims for that car. Have not seen one of those yet with a set of them on there. That would be a sharp looking ride with them.
Blacked out rims to me only look good on light colored cars. Not a fan of black on black. Makes them look dirty all the time. Just my views.

I am not a fan of the gold. Where I come from it usually means you are of Spanish speaking origin (which is fine) however they are usually in small jap cars with holes in the muffler.

I like the rims and personally LOVE the all black look, something flat or matte in finish. Either way nice car. For me it is a boat or a fun car so I am sticking with the boat.

Out of the ones posted here, I like these the best ...

http://forum.lsxtv.com/attachments/1450d1245252794-black.jpg?stc=1

I like the gold accents on your Camaro. My Mustang is black, with silver GT stripes (TAPE! :roll). I hope to get the "tape" removed and the stripes PAINTED on in a month or so - same width as now, but with an extra 1/4" stripe about 1" outside of the new (same size) GT stripes. I have no stripes or accent on the SIDES of mine and not sure if I will go that route? ;?

I haven't decided on my stripe color, yet, but I have the "beige" interior and thiink "goldish" stripes may look good? ;?

I have some stock "Ford" spoke wheels on it - brushed alum. finish - and I like them. I'm not a big fan of "blingy" rims or HUGE rims on ANY car, and don't care for the low profile tires on any of them either. Just my opinion.

Enjoy the car, no matter what you decide on - it's YOUR "blank canvas"!

Afishinado

Vanilla and chocolate thing.. Personally I am not a fan of the 22" wheels, but I'm an old school guy. My next Tahoe will be black and I am going to personalize it by making my own version of a Harley Road King theme model. the grille and wheels will be about the only chrome on it, and it will have some pin striping and and perhaps some very subtle flames on it somewhere. Picking wheels can be somewhat overwhelming. I really like the fender vent on your car, I am going to investigate something along those lines.. Like that a lot.

Sorry to be stupid, but what is involved in lowering the car? How can I be sure lowering it won't make it ride like a horse? I really don't want to change the way it rides.

Stuff like this is always a matter of your personal tastes.....unless its butt ugly. I think they look fine but I would take them off and paint the hub part of your brake rotors black and I'd get some black lug nuts....your brake calipers need to be either black (my preferance) or gold as well. Nice car.

03-26-2012, 06:15 PM
On the Camaro's I am not sure Russ. You'll have to ask these other boys that have them. On the vette you just turn the nuts under the shock bolts a few rounds and it lowers the car. Does not change a thing in the ride. Sorry I can't help with the Camaro. Like them, just never looked under them.
Cameroforum.com should have a lot of different rim photos so you can get a better idea..

Should be able to get all the info you need from one of these sights. When I lowered my Camaro years ago I used Eibach springs. Living in the north I regretted the move after a while because of potholes, steep driveways, raised manholes and such. Had to be more aware when driving around. If the roads in your area are in good condition then you shouldn't have a problem.

Those are nice wheels Russ. You know there is going to be a "but" right?

I have always been a chrome rim lover. I have gleaming chrome Escalade rims on my Chevy Avalanche.

But for the sports cars (and I love Camaro's, had a few) I like the chrome dish and the mag painted to match the color of the body.

So in your case I would have the black part of the rim chrome and the gold part black.

Just my opinion, like someone else mentioned it only matters if you like it.

BSH102- I am having the windows tinted on Saturday. I've had the car for 3 years and just never got around to doing it.

Chris- I don't know how the dish part of the rims could be painted because of the screws in the rim. The screws would all have to be removed and painted separately I would guess. Making the spokes gold was the easiest part of the wheel to change. I don't want to spend a pile of money having the wheels painted, I will likely leave the gold on but it would be very simple to remove it too.

Liveaboard- I will eventually remove the gold on the wheels and expose the shiny silver spokes. I can't believe how many people have suggested I lower the car. I travel to a couple of Camaro events over the summer and I'm afraid I will find some bad roads and I don't want to cause any damage from the car being lowered. Sorry but what is a TVS? I'm not a motorhead and have learned a lot since I've owned the car. There seems to be endless mods that people have done to their cars to make them unique.

Tvs is the supercharges sticking out the hood on the cars like in the photos of the sig.. Was joking....
Just having fun picking with you about dropping her to the tail. The camaro's look good without doing a whole lot to them. Tent the windows, aftermarket rims, and keep her clean is the biggest part and please don't stick nothing over the tail lights on the rear. God I hate those things. LOL. Thats what street cruising is all about. That shine and " Fine" custom rides, and the boys are right. Its all about what you want it to be. ... If you can't lower it by turning the shock bolts and have to buy different stuff to do it Russ honestly I wouldn't mess with it. It does make the car look better or cooler but if it cost a arm and a leg to get that look unless its total show, its not worth it. If lowering mine would have changed the ride I would have never done it but it didn't. Its hard with internet sometimes to get a feel for just what the other person is trying to say and I pick with everyone favor no one so always take what I say as laughing and picking with you. . My daily driver is the sky. She is not lowered. Vette is show and take it to the beach but hate speed bumps, won't even drive it in VA around the citys and if it were a DD it would fine its way back up. . I rest my case...:)

Sorry, but not digging the gold:(. The gold wheels and trim give the car, IMHO, a retro 70's kind of look, and when I think of 70's cars I think of 4-cylinder Mustangs, Chrysler Cordobas and other less-than-memorable vehicles.

I think those camaro's look phenomenal with the "murdered" all-black treatment. Just my two cents. And I agree with the other poster who suggested dropping the car a few inches.

Keep your eye out for the funnest ones that want the photos of your car. the ones that come up beside you and are passing just a tad faster than you are going. Maybe a half a mile a hour and see the hood then take their camera phone and try and angle it so they can get a photo and it looks like they are not looking at you. Tickles the mess out of me. I'll goose it a little and stay beside them,,,,
Your wheels look great.. Wish I could have tinted windows cause folks that are passing fast now can see all the gauges on the door pod and by the mirror and slam on brakes looking at it. The Law did not know what kinda hazzard they created when they make me take the tint off.:rofl:
Enjoy your car. Shes what you want her to be....
