Figured I better not put piss in a thread title...;)

Re-wiring a '98 Pursuit 2470, finishing up that miserable starboard back end to work in, going to rewire the washdown switch panel. A Pursuit trademark. Pull the panel out and find this...

Oh, great, a Carling switch with a sale sticker on it, and a 7A breaker when any washdown pump that I have ever installed requires at least a 15A breaker or fuse, as the pump that came out of there clearly shows...

So the panel got a new breaker and a new switch...

I had the switch, but the breaker I had to rob from the present owners batch of breakers I just got in today to re-wire his helm switch panel...

The PO, if he is on this forum, cost the new owner money, and although it may just be the cost of a breaker (yeah, I get them from sailboatowners.com for $4.66 a piece), and, luckily, because of my line of work, I have excellent condition switches handy. But that's not the point. So said PO gets a ride on...

SeaBob the world has all types.

Maybe he thought you need to match the breaker to the load? Woops!

Side note : can't log into ClassicAquasport and no one is returning my emails. Can you PM me?

Hummm - just looked at my factory panel that's laying in the floor at the moment - 7A breaker on the panel (but no SALE sticker on the switch though ;)).... Will have to check the pump details....

so this is definitelty a PO and not a factory install? i'm assuming the sale sticker gives it away, at least as far as the switch is concerned?? i can certainly see the problem with the breaker but what is wrong with the switch?

A circuit breaker is used to protect wiring. If your wiring is rated for only 7 amps, and you have installed a 12 amp breaker, good luck.

Ughhh.....If you have a 7amp load on a 7amp breaker good luck!

An 18 guage wire would easily handle 7 amps for a 15 foot run. It would easily handle a 15 amp load. I can't believe anyone would be using wire smaller than that to a pump.

7 Amps was too small a breaker by the sound of it unless the wires were very small.

The wiring is 14GA, can easily handle 15A. And if the pump says 15A breaker REQUIRED, than that's what's going in there...

And the new switch? Well, I don't like to use old switches that had their prongs bent...;?

For all's info, the owner replied back that when he tried to use his washdown pump BEFORE...it kept tripping the breaker.

Damn, should read those labels on the pumps...;?
