Wife and I have a short time frame to go. Flights are cheaper (way cheaper) flying in and out of Miami. Here's tentative plans:

Fly into MIA Fri night, spend the night by the airport. Rent car Sat am head straight to KW. (of course scooping out spots to stop at on the way back.) Spend Sat and Sun in KW, Get up Mon morning and take our time coming back through the Keys. Spend night in MIA and fly out next morning. I need help filling in the blanks? Plan on 4 hours to KW from MIA right? Where to stop and not to stop on the way back? Things we must do in KW? We are in our early 30's, like to drink and have fun. One day will be a lay by the pool day, prob Sunday after partying hard Sat night. Thanks guys!

The drive from Miami to KW can be enjoyable, but it can also be a killer if you're hungover headed north. I fly into KW now, since I've done the drive down there a few times. Its worth the extra $. Of course, you don't REALLY need a car in KW. (i.e. extra cost of ticket to KW is similar to cost of rental car)

The drive kind of interesting if you've never done it before but if you're on a limited schedule, flying direct into KW might be a better option provided that you can limit the layover time. If you fly into KW, and stay somewhere towards the Malory Square end of duval, there's really no need for a rental car so you can put that cost towards the flights. You can pretty much walk anywhere that you need to go in KW and if you decide that you want to explore a little, scooters are the way to go. If you like to party, you'll love KW. Just head to Duvall St. and you'll find everything you need for a good time. Staying on the Malory Square side of Duvall will also save a ton of money since you won't need a taxi. KW taxis are extremely expensive.

If you fly in to Miami and plan on spending the night there, head over to South Beach for a late dinner. Everything stays open late in the South Beach area.

We had our honeymoon in KW last year. Highly recommend Le Mar/Dewey House (http://www.southernmostresorts.com/la-mer-dewey-house/) for accommodations. We did the Duval crawl and took in all the other stuff. Part two of our 9 day trip was St. Augustine which is a long haul from KW, so we stopped in Jupiter and spent the nite and had drinks/supper with Wet-N-Wiley. It was a great trip. Next time we go down that way, we will not go past Islamorada. Simply beautiful.

Definitly recommend flying into key west. Three words....SPRING BREAK TRAFFIC!! Like other member said after car rental, gas and parking costs. Probably comes out about same price. Was in key west two weeks ago, went to marathon for the day, drive back took forever with kids piling into key west for spring break.

thanks for the info guys. keep it coming. We would be going the last weekend of April, flying into MIA about 9:30pm. About a $400 difference flying into/out of KW vs. Miami plus there are 2 stops vs. non stop. Rental car 88 bucks plus gas. Leaning towards the Parrott Key Hotel. Anyone stayed there?

That's $400 difference for BOTH tickets, right? Last spring it was $150/each more to fly into KW. 1 stop for connection.

You should not have to worry about any spring breakers at the end of April. They are there now and for another week or so.

Yeah $400 more total for both tickets coming thru Key West, stopping in Charlotte and Tampa. 7 hours. Going thru ORF-MIA, 2 hours non stop. $500 vs. almost $900. Plus the hotel rooms in Miami are 150 bucks cheaper per night. AND I dont mind driving!
