While doing some cleaning and sanding in the bilge so I could repaint and pretty it up I incidently cut the transducer cable right at the top of the stem. It's an Airmar B744V linked to an older Furuno that works fine but is only 600w and outdated. I recently got a Garmin 740s for my birthday and opted for the radar for now with the intentions of getting a new transducer later on. So here's the dilema.
1.Do I just abandone the B744V and leave it in place and install a B164 for the Garmin?
2. Cut out the B744V, inlarge the the cavity and go with the B260?
3. Get another transducer for the furuno?
Just looking for some objective input. I'm really pissed about the whole situation as I just rebuit the console to accomodate the new Garmin and now I will have a big hole where the furuno was.

I would pop it out and install a B164 in it's place.

You can easily enlarge the hole by cutting a plug out of a 2x4 with a 2' hole saw. Duct tape the plug until it fits neatly in the old transducer hole, then put the plug on the 3-7/8 hole saw centering bit. Insert the plug into the old hole and it will hold the centering bit for a perfect new hole.

Glass and fill the old fairing bolt hole.

What are you fishing depths and conditions..that is what determines your transducer choice.

And what ever transducer you get as long as it is a Mix and Match cable you can use it on the Furuno first and later change the cable to use it on the Garmin.

A B164 is a three element transducer and will be 6 times more sensitive than the B744.
Great for shallow to mid water use.

If fishing deeper the 260 might be an option.
