BRIELLE — Two charter buses filled with fishermen left before dawn for Washington DC, hoping to hook the attention of lawmakers, Organizers of the Capitol Hill rally want most of all for Congress to lift strict deadlines for biological milestones when rebuilding fish stocks.
But demonstrators have other issues too, such as aggressive law enforcement practices that federal officials admitted went too far with penalties.
“We need regulations, no question about it,’’ said Marty Stillfusen, a longtime fisherman from Point Pleasant. “But they've changed it into a money making racket.’’
Environmental groups arre already pushing back hard against the demonstrators' message. In an opinion piece published online at OutdoorHub, Matt Tinning of the Marine Fish Conservation Network denounced rally organizers of the Recreational Fishing Alliance as a “fringe’’ group.
